Extended Warranty or not - Montana Owners Club

We take delivery in two weeks on a custom built 3720rl 2018. Looking for thoughts on if we should consider getting an extended warranty or wait a year and then do so .
We are going full time end of this month Jumped in a the way.

I generally wait and buy an extended warranty till the regular warranty is getting ready to expire. It gives me some time to assess the reliability of the unit and decide if I really want or need an extended warranty. I also don't tie the money up during the period of manufacturer coverage. Shop around - the dealer typically doesn't provide the best deal on an extended warranty.

Not me. Everything in the coach is under a warranty of one type or another for at least a year, some longer. Extended warranties are expensive and sometimes hard to get approval to use.

Took 7yr extended warranty at the time of purchase, $50 dollar deductible/use, on vehicles I don't buy it but after the issues on the last new RV we purchased it for this one. The fridge alone would be 5 grand or more on it, we have had a couple things fixed using it this past summer at our dealers with no issues getting coverage at all. Glad we bought it as it is piece of mind and we've almost recovered our original money with the repairs that have been done. Our unit is a 2015 so a few more years of coverage to go and given we are both retired as of last year it is nice to know a major repair is covered and would not come from our pocket.

My thinking has always been the same on extended warranties. I tend to think that if you are a part time camper then you may want to just take a chance without one. If you are full time and are using all those appliances/systems in an RV 365 days a year then there is a lot better chance an extended warranty will pay off.

As far as saving money on one by waiting, that depends on several things including your dealer. There can be a lot of mark up by them. If you can get a 5 year extended, say with Cornerstone for example, right from your dealer from the start for between $1,500 to $2,000 then I say go for it. If they want a ton more then they are marking it way up and maybe shop around.

When starting RVing from scratch a few years ago we got an extended warranty on our used Class A. We had a failure of one of our ACs which we thought would require a replacement since the AC was no longer being made and parts were not available.

The warranty company told us that the part would cost $35 to replace which was within our deductible of $250. When we insisted that we needed a new AC because there was no such part available anywhere, they offered to contribute $35 less our $250 deductible. In other words, screw us!

I've never trusted third party warranties and this is exactly why. The novice RVer in me wanted some peace of mind, but when called upon it just wasn't there.

If you are a person who would put your money in the bank knowing when you take it out it will be worth less after inflation adjusted you need an ESP. If you can put your money in the stock market and not worry when there is a correction or bear market you don’t need or won’t an ESP.
If I had my money in the bank I’d still be working.

Very personal decision for you, on this forum there are many opinions. Personally, I had a refrigerator replaced at year 6 of a 7 year warranty on our first Montana. More than paid for the entire premium over the seven years. "Things" on a RV are incredibly expensive to replace. I have piece of mind, others will have different views, it is YOU that needs to be comfortable with your decision, good luck.

As above, it's a crap shoot either way. We got a very good deal on a used 14 Mountaineer 375 fl that looked spotless. We are full timers. To get the deal we were almost required to take their 5 year warranty. $2200. So far we have had the water heater replaced ($800) including labor and the refrigerator twice. ($2300) just the first time. Also the toilet failed. In our case it was a worthwhile investment on an almost new trailer. Would I do it again, maybe but sure not sorry I did this time.
