Bad connections

Took the 1 month old Big Sky in for service because the front a/c kept cycling off and on. Code-E1. Bad connection. While in the shop, they started checking all electrical connections. Unbelievable! So many of the connectors, that were crimped on the ends of cables, were loose that I lost count. Additionally, some of the connectors didn't even have the nuts that were supposed to be holding them on the terminals. One of the communication cables between the a/c units had been cut and crimped back together just 3" from the connector. No reason for that. I can't believe Keystone's top of the line units (or any of them for that matter) roll out in this condition. I love my BS, but where is the QC?

I've bought both new and used units over the years and have definitely reached the opinion that a few years old is good. Most of the bugs have been discovered and fixed, and one can find units that are clean. Even using the RV Consumers Group PDI on ours, I still have been finding a few things that the factory didn't do right. Most RVs seem to be made by the crew from the old Studebaker plant just before they went belly up.

Mark Martin was on the NASCAR radio net work today and it was mentioned that these days mark was working as a mechanic. Turns out he had a new high dollar motor home and was at the race track fixing all the things that were wrong with it. The announcers went on to discuss how no matter how much you pay for one, there's still a lot of things that need to be fixed or replaced. It's unfortunately industry wide, which means once folks like us get all the bugs worked out and the mods made we don't have much interest in buying a new one and starting all over again.

Tell me about it. We are 27 months into this 2013 3402 Big Sky and we just now feel we maybe have all the build quality bugs worked out.

We must be the odd ones. We're going on 2 years with our 3400RL and so far ,the only factory foulup we've found is the baggage door seal must have gotten some glue stuck to the outside of the seal at the top and the seal stuck to the door instead of the frame. Both doors, too yet!!!! Warranty fix at CW.

I want to send out a GIANT "THANK YOU!" to John and Mayflower RV in Sherwood, AR, for fixing our wiring problem on the new Big Sky. Everyone was so nice and John worked tirelessly to get us fixed up as quickly as possible. They are truly awesome and I highly recommend them if you need anything RV related in Central Arkansas.

How can it happen that some folks can have zero problems even when full timing or one or two problems over months or years yet every day we read here of multiple problems on our rigs. We have had two Montana' since 2006 with many build quality problems. This 2013 has had over 30 problems large and small in 27 Months. What goes on in the assembly line.????

Rich, if I had to guess, I would say that most of the issues are related to build interruptions due to lunch breaks or end of shift followed by training issues of new hires. If the unit you get happens to be the one with the new guys or where certain processes were interrupted... I know in the computer manufacturing world that these were the top causes...other than the sometimes "we have a number to make, ship it anyway" that would rear its ugly head. I would love to be the "fly on the wall" watching what goes on during a monty build... John

our front A/C was intermittent because the thermal sensor was reading 20 degs low sometimes. Not good on a hot day. CW in Fayetteville, NC had seen this before. They said that the sensor had 4 connectors between the mount location and the thermostat. They just hard wired it eliminating the connectors. We are good to go now.

We have a 2014 3582RL and the living room ac does not seem to cool as well as the bed room ac. It was 98 degrees the day it did not seem to work well. I wonder if my rear ac is shutting off. Were the loose wires under the cover on top of the roof?

There are full timers here that use their rigs far more than we do. The more you use them the more problems you will have. IMO these guys are not designed for heavy use. We have run over 88 K miles since 2006 on two Montana's and we have experienced multiple problems large and small. This 2013 3402 big sky has had the low use in the 27 Months we have had it about 8 K miles and has experienced over 30 problems. Two failed holding tanks, two popped wall panels. large sconce over the kitchen slide fell off, failed Norcold, 4 failed tire valve stems all the chair bottoms fell off ,Cable and sat inputs wired backwards, Light over the kitchen counter fell off the ceiling, compartment struts pulled away from the door and those are only the more memorable ones. that is not a slam to Montana I would have expected that on any comparable brand. After 27 Months we are hoping for our first failure free trip to Florida for the winter. Our first two trips 2012,2013 were not failure free.

Hi

We have 80,000 miles on our Montana but most of the problems happened in the first 3,000. Then the problems for the next 2 years cost me $20,000 to fix. All problems were related to improper construction.

Jimmer - there were two wires pulled out of connectors that were under the cover on the rear roof-top unit. It was the "communication" wire between the two units and caused the bedroom unit to cycle off and on every few seconds. Also had several connectors in the front battery compartment that weren't crimped on very well. They just pulled out when you jiggled them.
