Air Conditioner

Can anyone tell me how you clean the air conditioner. Is there a filter on the roof? We spend our winters in Arizona where there is a lot of sand and when we use our air it never seems to shut off. I am wondering if there is sand in it.

Thanks as always for your never ending help.

you need to go up on the roof, unscrew the plastic cover and remove it. from there you can see the cooling fins, fan etc: you should be able to flush out everything with a spray of water from a hose, set it on shower if you have a nozzle like that. that should remove any dirt getting into the fins.maybe a spray with some soapy water first and then rinse.your only filter is inside behind the vent

If you are in Arizona, and it is hot even though winter, and it sounds like you have only one ac, it may well not shut off and run continously because of the heat. Might be nothing wrong with the unit, just working hard.

I'm sure you know this, but you should be taking the filter out and cleaning it regularly. I do it about once a month. You remove the panel with the four tabs that's just in front of the air dump and then wash the filter in the sink.

DQDick is talking about the one inside the rig right behind the air intake. This is where the air is returned to the cooling unit. DO NOT reverse the thing to clean it out or any remaining dust particles do not get returned to the cooling unit. Remember which side was against the unit and which side was towards the rig interior. This one needs to be done periodically depending how much the unit is used.

As for the roof, when you remove the shroud cover to hose things clean (or you can use a dry rag) there is no filter to worry about. Watch for bug nests (especially wasps and hornets) because many types of bugs like the warmth, nooks, crannies and the hum of the unit. Go figure. This does not need to be done as often, but it's good to follow some schedule.

Not to hijack the thread, but as to the inside filters. My filter just looks like a very thin, very light sponge type filter. You can easily see thru it. I can't see how it matters if it is reversed. Are the newer ones different perhaps? Or did the previous owner (of only 9 months) replace mine with something else?
Thanks for any info.

Our 2008 Montana also has the foam filter on the inside. No reason to try to keep in in the same direction after washing as both sides are the same. Not sure if a washable spray on the living area side will pick up more small dust particles. I can see where it would lead to more frequent cleaning.

Keep in mind there are different manufactures and models installed on the Montana. The basics are the same but access may differ. I have the ChillGrille and access to the filter by turning 1 plastic knob and the filter drops down.
