Roof construction
I will soon be mounting a slot panel to the roof of my 2018 Montana, can anyone tell me what is under the roofing materials that will grip the screws?
It feels as though it may be plywood but I would like to make sure.

There is plywood, but it's not very thick and I believe it's OSB, which doesn't hold screws very well. But that's what we have. There should be an aluminum roof truss every couple feet.

I have been trying that, seems to give back confusing information. Sure don’t want to go probing through the roofing to make sure.

I've had my solar panels mounted on the Montana for 5 years now and I screwed them into the roof with no problems. I didn't hit any trusses. I put dicor under the feet of the panels first and then the screw and have not had any water intrusion either.

I used stainless steel screws. They were about 3/4" if I remember correctly.

Our 2012 has steel trusses, but if I remember correctly, at the factory tour when we attended the 2014 fall rally, they had gone to a plastic truss. It was supposed to be as strong as the steel. No idea what they are using now. If yours are steel, a magnet would help finding them.

I just mounted four 300 watt solar panels on our roof over the summer using 1” SS #10 screws. The OSB underlayment has held the screws well to this point. I have driven the 5er 2900 miles since installation with no issues. Be aware that the roof edges do not have that OSB underlayment. At least that was the case on my roof.

There is a video on youtube that keystone put out in 2009 showing the factory construction and components. It will give you an idea of what the roof is made of. I don't know how to attach the video to this post (sorry) but if you google "Keystone Montana video" you can find it.

That is a good shot of a roof truss. Notice that no plastic grommet was used to "line" the holes in the truss to protect the wires from eventually/maybe being a Braden by the sharp edge of the truss. I felt okay until I saw that picture.

Thank you for the information on the screws. What did you mean by the edge of the roof? Is that to mean the outer most edge to the side wall?

The outer edges of the roof running front to back are sheet metal under the rubber roof material and has no support under it.

2014 3100RL has plastic roof trusses under 3/8” OSB. Don’t ask how I know. Also, don’t forget, magnets will stick to steel but not aluminum.
