New EGR on F350 = poor mileage!

What a big disappointment. Check engine light comes on, oh no. Ford garage swaps out EGR with new one and says old one caused a lot of problems in the 6.4. They install update and off I go minus $536! Noticed shortly after that my mileage was suffering tank after tank, since past November. Won't get above 12, even on highway. Anybody know what gives? Would rather had the old one left in not working!!!! Seems to regenerate a lot more often as well.......geesh!

Did not have a 6.4 but did have the EGR go bad on my '07 6.0 at just under 36,000 miles. Replaced under warranty by Ford and I did not see any change at all in fuel mileage. I would go back and speak to the service advisor or manager and explain what has happened.

My check engine light would come on it was the ERG put some SeaFoam conditioner in and it would go off within 100 miles. Did this for probably 10-12 times then the EGR finally got to clogged had it replaced. Didn;t see any changes in the fuel milage or performance but bouth a new one shortly after.

We had a 6.4 in our 2010 and the ford folks stressed adding cetane to bring the cetane level to 45 which the 6.4 requires. Once I began to do this it regened much less. You will find many MOC folks which use cetane as a regular additive. I personally got tired of 8.5 mpg pulling our 5th wheel and traded for a 2012 with a 6.7. More HP, more torque and 25% better fuel economy. It cost me $13,000 to move up to the 2012 thus I will likely never recover the difference in fuel savings. I simply got hard headed and made the trade. Good luck

There is something seriously wrong with the truck. Our 08 6.4 now has 56K miles on it . We are seeing 15./16MPG plus driving back and forth to Disney world to work. We have NEVER got 8.5 MPG average on a towing trip.We see a average of 10.5 11.5 at the end of any given day towing.62/65 MPH.I meam we are near 23K GCWR towing..The truck alone weighs in at 9K.We have not had a major problem, we have never had a tow truck for more tha 3 years but this one is a keeper.

Oh we do add cetane and have since day one on the advise of a good diesel guy.Diesel kleen from wallmart. It makes a difference.

The last trip I took to Wyoming pulling my little 2955 I averaged 10.1 MPG and a lot of that on lonely interstates out west running 80 to 85 MPH. So I don't understand you not getting better than 12 MPG. These trucks aren't known for great mileage, but 12 empty.

The OP also said they installed an update. What they probably did was flash the computer and that is what is causing the poor mileage. I have heard that from a few people after having thier computer flashed.

I had mine reflashed last spring, mileage went to pot and came back after about the 3rd tank of diesel. Read on a diesel forum that is normal.

Junglejim n Weekenders I think that's it! I just filled up 3 days ago and noticed all of a sudden my mileage is back up where it was before the new EGR and flash update. Whew......wish they would've told me that at the shop, but I'll take it. Thanks for the insight! D

ddettorre, glad your milage came back. It helps when prices are going up also. It amazes me when you take your truck in to the dealership and they take it upon thier self to do unneccesary work (flashing computers) when you did not authorize it, and it can't be reversed!

Thanks JJ, I just checked my city driving and I'm up to 14.4, just like before!
