Reese Goosebox Pros Cons

Hi,

Seriously looking at a Reese Goosebox. For those of you who have or had them can you share your experience with them?

If you installed it yourself any tricks to make it easier to install?

Looking at it to keep bed clean when not in use.
Looking to not have to lift, move, and store heavy chunks of metal.

Not interested in an Anderson UH.

I avoid manhandling my B&W Companion hitch by leaving it attached to the pinbox of the 5th wheel. Loosen a bolt and pull the handle in the wheel well, then lift the whole hitch assembly off the truck with the front 5er jacks and leave it hanging. Reverse the process to mount the hitch on the truck.

Have used a com-along in past to lift hitch and drive out from underneath. Letting it down the cable com-along skips some teeth making it tricky to lower down. Am considering getting a light weight chain hoist from Harbor Freight to make the switch.

A little different, but here is what I did installing a 5th Airborne on box. Alone.

Backed truck so tailgate was under pin box.
Lowered trailer until old pin box was just barely above tailgate.
Removed bolts and let pin box ease down on tailgate.
Raised trailer until frame cleared old pin box and moved it to the side.
Moved new pin box under frame.
Lowered trailer until frame dropped over new pin box and holes were close.
Used large screwdriver to align holes and inserted bolts.

You could probably do something similar by using some blocks to hold up the Goosebox when installing it. Or maybe a friend to help hold it up.

I would check with Lipperard first! I think that will void your frame warranty!

We (Montana Campers) have been warned about using these goose neck devices to tow our campers as it may void the frame warranty.

As far as I know, the Reese Goose Box is the only Goose neck that will not void the warranty, mainly because it's not an adapter added to the normal King Pin, but a complete replacement for the standard King Pin.

Thank you I was thinking of a similar install procedure

Now if only folks could tell me how they like them........

I loved everything about on my old trailer except for the extra rise needed to clear the ball with electric jacks and the air bag. If you were off level, it would be an issue with the range of the jacks to clear the ball and then lower the trailer enough to be level. This only happened on unlevel sites where the front of the trailer had to be lower. With the 6 point hydraulics I don't think it would be an issue. If the air bag is inflated to 50psi (max), the coupler pivots downward an inch or so (unloaded). Second issue was aligning the ball with the coupler. You have to be close since there's no large capture plate on the Goosebox. Third issue, I've hit the tailgate panel while pulling away. Just about ripped the plastic cover off the inner panel with the folding handle on the Ford step tailgate. I removed it completely now and just put a regular non-handle panel so it's flat. It works great clearing the neck of my goose neck dump trailer.

Other than those issues, I'd probably get one for my 3790 in the future. The bed being open is great.

I never used the safety chains. I had them in the trailer storage just in case I was in a state that required them, but was told by Reese they met the J2638 test standard and weren't necessary (that's why they aren't included)

Here's a pic of the 16k version I installed from years ago... I installed it by placing it in the bed of the truck and pivoting it up to the pinbox frame and aligning one bolt and then used that bolt to align the rest.
