Veterans save a few bucks.

If you have Verizon phone service there is a special 15% discount off your bill before taxes. You need to go to a real Verizon store and ask for offer # 117818. You will need your DD214 form.

BTW: This also covers Air Cards.

Thanks! Our state also does a discount on property tax for veterans.

bigmurf, I just had to show my retired ID card, no DD214 required....Maybe certain stores are doing it differently but in Ft Walton Beach, FL that is all I needed......That was 2 months ago....

Didn't Verizon buy out Alltel? We have Alltel and wonder if that offer is good for that service for veterns?

I'll have to ask if they will combine multiple discounts. I already get a corporate discount through my company, but if they'll allow me to double up that will REALLY save some bucks. I strongly suspect this is only wishful thinking though.

Reference Alltel, when we got new cell phones a couple of months ago they had a sign advertising the discount, but when I went in and asked, the said it was for active duty troops only. Think I'll wander back down there with my DD214 and retired ID card and try again referencing the Verizon offer #. Two months ago, they were in the throws of the new merger and really were not prepared to answer any questions.

When we went in for our discount we were told it's for the primary phone only and did not include internet service, but ask anyway and post your findings. We have two phones and one internet but only get one discount....

Thanks bigmurf! We have a 2 cell fone Family Plan and the Verizon discount, in our case, applied to the first cell fone which is $60 per month. We save $9.00 a month which is a great deal for us. The savings per month almost add up to the 2nd cell fone cost. Verizon did require my DD214 even though I am retired Navy. Got it today and feel like I've got more change in my pocket!! Tks.

Our Local Verizon store looked at me like I had two heads when I asked about the discount. They thought I was scamming them?? I asked them to check it out...

Thanks bigmurf. Went to Verizon store in Owasso, OK yesterday with my retired ID card. Got the 15% discount and was told that I now have a 12% discount on all accessories. The discount only applies to a phone where you, the veteran are the primary owner. It does not apply to aircard usage. In our case, my phone is $39.99 per month. With the $6.00 discount my bill is only $33.99 per month.

I went by my local Alltel store today with my DD214 and retired ID card and requested the discount. They looked up my plan which is no longer offered and said stick with the plan I have. Bottom line, to be eligible, the primary plan package must be $39.95 or higher. My existing plan is $29.95 per month for myself and about $10.00 for the wife's phone. We seldom go over the 200 anytime minutes and it covers the southeast USA from VA to the Florida keys. If I ever start wandering the country full time, I'll change plans.

Today it worked. The manager was a veteran herself and knew exactly what to do.

I finally got into my local Verizon store. I gave her the offer # 117818. She said that it does not apply to Aircards, only cellphones. I couldn't use the offer on my cellphone because the account is in my son's name.(Cheaper for us) Anyway thanks for the info. Don't you just love this website?

They are correct. The discount only applies to the cell phone account and it must be in the veterans name. I mentioned the discount at the American Legion meeting last week and no one knew about it. There were a bunch of Veterans here. Hope they don't mention my name at the Verizon store.

Only good for Active Duty? Do tell. Go back and inform them an individual doesn't have a DD214 until they're discharged or re-enlisted.

I went back to Alltel and changed my plan to the $39.95 monthly fee and then asked how to get the discount. In short, for us Army folks, active and retired, you must go into your Alltel profile and change your email address to your AKO Army email address and then they will start offering the discount. So now, my monthly statement goes to that address vice my primary email address. Not a problem as long as the 15% discount gets applied by using the AKO address.
