Recall for a problem we've heard about here!

This was on today's issue of RV Travel: Unexpected fall? Keystone RV Company is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Montana and 2014-2015 Raptor vehicles. In the affected vehicles, a rivet for the quad entry steps may shear and fail, causing the steps to give when being used. If the rivet shears and causes the quad step to fail, the step user may fall, increasing the risk of personal injury. The remedy for this recall is still under development. The recall is expected to begin March 16, 2015. Owners may contact Keystone customer service at 866-425-4369. Keystone's number for this recall is 15-224.

Good info Dick, our front steps did exactly that and the dealer fixed it by installing a bolt in place of the rivet. Guess I will check and see if the new fix is any better, who knows, maybe they will replace the steps? Doubt it though.

Mine broke at that spot a couple of months ago and I put a bolt in it to hold it together. Contacted CW a couple of days ago about it through my extended warranty. They were going to cover it and ordered the new steps. Maybe I should let them know about the recall.

Thanks Dick for the info!

The rivet on the top left side is all but pulled out. I have concrete blocks under the step so that the rivet does not pull out.

Will call Keystone Customer Service/Not Monday.

Thanks for the heads up.

I have not trusted these steps right from the start in the new Monty so I use the plastic level up blocks under the step to keep them from sending me earth bound on my head. Thanks for the heads up I'll be looking into this for sure.

We replaced our three step set with a much stronger one, can't imagine trying to get my big butt up and down a fourth step as flimsy as our three in the first place.

After I heard about all the 2014 Montana's with these Hickory Springs quad steps failing, I've kept a close eye on mine. I've been working with Tiara RVs in Elkhart to get them replace with the new type they started using in early 2014. Mine was built in November 2013, but is called a 2014. This recall number may push it through.

I just heard back from Tiara RV Sales and they heard about the recall late last week, so they are going to pursue my claim against that. This is the last warranty item I need to resolve. That's good, since I've been out of warranty since Dec.

Contacted Keystone Customer Service and they advised me that my unit is not in the Recall. I explained that my steps broke in the same place but they wouldn't do anything about it. Guess I am going to have to go through my extended warranty program now.

Just called Keystone customer service and although my Vin has not come up yet the CS person said it looks like it will be on the list as they are still entering them into the system. It will take about a week to 2 weeks to enter all of the 5,390 units affected.

We will call back or wait until they send the official letter.

Here's the fix:

REMEDY:
Keystone will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace two rivets joining the second and third step, and replace four rivets on the top step with fasteners, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin March 16, 2015. Owners may contact Keystone customer service at 1-866-425-4369. Keystone's number for this recall is 15-224.

So, the fix is to drill out the rivets and replace with bolts.

Mine did that in first year. They were replaced under warranty.

I took our 2013 3150RL to the dealer today for the step recall repair. Looking at the "fix" this evening at home I will be contacting the dealer and Keystone Monday morning to provide feedback. The top rivets were replaced by a bolt, bushing, washer, and nut. These appear to be tight but the step pivots freely. I was startled when I looked at the bolt, washer, and nut on the bottom step. They felt tight when I left the dealer. 25 miles later the nuts had loosened. I undid them by hand to measure the size. There are no lock washers nor are the nuts the locking variety. Tomorrow I will install new stainless bolts, washers, and locknuts. It appears the fix may be a greater hazard than the problem.

Has anyone else had their steps repaired under this recall?
