Another bites the dust
Evergreen as of last Friday no longer is in business. A meeting was called with all employees when they were all told they no longer had jobs. They sold their building the week before.

How come some RV manufacturers are having record sales and others are bitting the dust?

Ironically, Evergreen was voted the fastest growing RV manufacturer for the past 3 years.

I guess just because you are selling product doesn't mean you are makeing any money. Our local dealer told me they owed a half million for frames. Most people who own business if they set down and figured what it cost to open the doors every morning they wouldn't open the doors. I'll bet Dick would vouch for that.

New one just end started up, vanleigh, sons of tiffin, long time class a manufacturer. Pretty nice looking fiver, named it Villanova. One goes out of business, another new start opens up. Good products still require a smart business plan to stay operational, I guess.

According to some things I found on the internet an investor pulled out of Evergreen and they couldn't find anyone to take their place. You don't make money as a startup and apparently the investor didn't understand that and didn't want to loose anymore waiting for the possible good times to come.

Saw the vanleigh, by tiffin at the Tampa show in January.
Needed some tweaking at that point. Very similar to a MH inside.
And, it had VERY nice light wood. (Those that know me, are aware that I am NOT a fan of the dark interiors, it sets my SAD off bigtime.)

It's been comming long time. Defaulted on bonds couple years back. Never made the numbers they promised the banks and government backed loans. The ideas were good but they did couple prototype builds that cost them. That is a common in manufacturing. Country Coach made major investment in designing their "patio" model motor home with glass slider to a raised porch off the kitchen. It was the brainchild of the "smartest guys in the room". Yet the serious and expensive engineering is rumored to have burned through all the cash that might have saved them during the collapse of the economy.
Finally while it was a novel design, it made the kitchens clostrphobic. While people raved at the concept, it was not something people wanted to buy. Three steps down you have the biggest patio in the world. Why give up 13 ft of potential indoor living to have a raised deck. Good company's come and go, but Thor seems to hold its own!

The average mostly uninformed RV buyer buys on price and glitter not quality most have no concept of quality. The Evergreen models were very nice and IMO of above average quality. They were also expensive To the average uninformed buyer the Jayco or Montana line look just as good as the Evergreen models.

Agree with it all. The glitz, paint and surface stuff sells all different types of RVs, not just 5ers. Most buyers don't have a clue. Jayco has been around, has volume and can build decent quality for a much better price than a start up. If the PDI hadn't gone well on our '10 Monty three years ago, we would have bought one.

Think about how many people buys a car or truck and don't know a single thing about it except the color. When I buy anything over a hundred dollars I know what I'm getting. Being in a machine shop taught me that.

Our selling dealer in 2006 sold both Jayco and Montana. He had them side by side and we did not care which brand we purchased. It was floor plan and storage space that sold us the 06 3400 and Montana service that sold us the 13 3402. We toured both plants more than once as they are a very few miles apart. Quality, Construction, workmanship no different.Same workforce, same vendors both good brands. You make your purchase on your needs and take your chances.
