fantastic fan on or off during travel.
we are getting ready for our trip from oklahoma to south dakota the end of june to spend a week with my family there. the question is can i run my fantastic fan and have some air flow in the trailer while going down the road, the old monty i didnt have 2 ac's and i had covers on the vents and opened them while traveling. it helped by not letting it get to hot inside all day while traveling. is there a way with the new monty's to open a vent and the fantastic fan to have some airflow. ps. i dont have a generator or i would run it and the ac.

Hello Okierver. I have ran my Fantastic Fan on hot days while traveling in an attempt to keep the heat down in the 5er. I ran mine in manual mode on a low setting and left a couple of windows cracked open so it could draw air through. I am assuming you have a vent cover on the room for the Fantastic Fan, because I don't think traveling down the road with that vent open and no cover would be good for it. I have dual alternators and batteries in my truck, but I don't believe the Fantastic Fan would draw enough to worry about if you don't. -Glenn

If you have the covers over the vents, such as Maxx-air, or Fantastic covers, you would be OK. But, if not, and it's just the "open and close" lid that comes with the fan, then I would not run with it open. They are not that substantial, and the wind would beat them to death, possibly breaking or ripping them completely off. I've even tried just "cracking" the vent cover open a bit, and going down the road, it eventually vibrated open just from the wind buffeting it.
If you want to run with them open, you should get the "permanent" mounted covers for them. If you do, make sure you get the ones that are made for the Fantastics, as they are a bit taller so the lid can open all the way.
As also mentioned, crack a couple of small windows open so fresh air can get in while the vent is open.

yes that was my thougt to just to crack a coule windows and open the vent. no i havnt purchased the fantastic cover yet but i do have a $50 gift card from camping world. guess i know what i can order.

We have covers on both of our fantastic fans and have done that for years.

I wouldn't travel down the road with any kind of vent open unless it had a vent cover. As stated, those vent lids are not very beefy and the turbulance would eventually destroy it. Most of our fivers are "drafty" enough to just travel with a couple of side windows open. The belly pan is by no means air tight and it's area connects directly to the vent area under your steps and on into the living area.

We have three fantastic fans, all with maxairr covers. I never travel with fans running. I did have them wired to be open with no fan running. Passive venting has resulted in no problems in my experience. Was told, perhaps incorrectly, that fans can bring in Road and Brake dusts etc. Windows are all shut tight, while on the road.

I have operated ours on auto many times going down the road. The rain sensor works very well and closes the cove and shuts the fan off if it rains.

I agree about the dust and dirt if windows left open, but what I wonder is why no one mentioned rain. In the south in the summer we have t-storms on a daily basis. Leave a side window open a crack and you get a flood!
