Traveling Computer

I think I'm in the market for a new computer. Until now I always used my laptop for travel and leave my G4 at our home base in Phoenix. For our 3295RK, I planned to store the laptop in a briefcase style portfolio under the desk. Now I am thinking about a new machine. But, desk tops like Apple's e-machine is 30% cheaper than an equivilant laptop. That gets my attention.

What is yur experience? What do you do with your computer or monitor when you are on the Road? Can it safely set on the desk? Should it be stowed underneath the desk? Or, is a laptop the only safe way to go? Any thoughts and help especially real experience will be much appreciated.....
