CO2 Detector
Hi all. A quick question. Why would a CO detector go off and show a reading if the RV is parked with no propane tanks hooked up to it. The RV has not been in use for the past three months. The detector is less than a year old and the batteries looked fine.

CO2 would be the lack of oxygen. Bug spray, cats litter box and any number of things could give you a false reading as they can with a propane detector.. A vehical or generator running where the exhaust can be drawn into the rig will set it off with good reason. Haven't ever had a problem with a CO2 detector, but I've never had a propane detector last as long as they are supposed to. One only lasted two years.

The unit is giving off a numbered reading that changes as you look at it. There is no corroding of the batteries (that is what I meant by batteries are fine).

CO detector
...add to the list of things that make it go off - dog hair dust bunnies.
We had to replace one in a Jayco a few years back, but I learned a lot while investigating what could make it go off. The main thing I learned is that they need to be replaced after 7 years of service, and they are more expensive that I anticipated. I think we paid $125 at Camping World...maybe a little less.

I have had that happen not only the co2 detector but the smoke detectors also in the house and camper. Sometimes they just freak out. I would just replace them at that point.

Propane will not make a CO (carbon monoxide) detector go off. CO is the byproduct of fuel burning, not the presence of gas such as propane. More than likely the detector is bad, and just because it says replace at 7 years doesn’t mean it will last that long, and that goes for propane detectors too. I just saw on the Home Depot site that they have 10 year lithium powered CO detectors for about $40. I recently replaced our smoke detector with a 10 year unit, when it sounds the end of life alarm, you just replace it, no annual battery replacements. The price quoted is probably a combination CO/propane detector, and they do run that high.
