Want to Hear What I did?

Up here in NW Wisconsin we are seeing a very early Spring. So last Sunday I started to power up the Montana from its deep winter sleep. Everything looked great. That evening I went out to shut the furnace off and I slipped on a small patch of ice and split my knee cap in two on my 8 month old new total knee! Had surgery Wednesday morning by the same great surgeon who did my knee. He said the hardest thing for me to do was the rehab, he really needs me off the right leg for 4 to 6 weeks for the knee cap to grow together.

I just live for this time of the year and here I sit with my leg in a brace watching the beautiful weather go bye. Like my wife says, it could have been worse, at least this can be fixed!

Sorry to hear about your problems. Rehab can be a real issue. Kind of surprised at what happened. I 've had a total and got another coming up in a couple of months and my understanding was that my replaced kneecap is plastic. Maybe I misunderstood.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. However, your idea of beautiful weather is MUCH different than mine. (Northern Wisconsin in the winter??)

What??? Propped up for 4 to 6 weeks, at this time of year??? Obviously this doctor is NOT a camper. How dare he suggest such treatment to one of our fine adamant campers. Anyhow, hope you can stand the down time, take it easy and will say a Prayer your up and at-em again real soon. Happy Trails, Steve and Susie

That hurt just thinking about it! Hope everything heals quickly and you can get back to doing everything that spring weather brings.

I am with Dick on the medical side. DW had her second knee replaced last year and we were thinking that her "old" kneecap was gone. There may be different ways of replacing knees.....who knows, I was just the driver for her therapy visits and glad of it!

Can you do any backyard camping where your camper is parked? Assuming you could get up the stairs.. or you could at least sit propped up under the awning :-)

Thanks for all the thoughts. Actually this is much more difficult to rehab from because with the total knee they want you to bend it as soon as possible. I am stuck with a brace that keeps the knee at "0" degrees which is absolutely straight. The surgeon wants to sacrifice mobility and muscle strength loss for a good bone healing. I was so lucky, I did not damage the knee implants, either the top or bottom. With my total knees, and I am not sure if they are all done the same, the surgeon shaves the back of your own knee cap and attaches a plastic "washer" that glides up and down in a grove on the knee implants. Again I was lucky, I did not damage this part either. So he brings the two bone segments together and I have a couple of pins and wire so that the bone will grow together and heal. It is very depressing, but the one thing that keeps me going is what my wife said, "I am lucky that this can be fixed, it could have been so much worst, like if hit my head or something." My wife is such a strong person, I am so blest to have her with me to get through this challenge in my life.

Oh the memories. You have brought back when I broke my collarbone and all the shenanigans of no mobility that came with that.

However, you've got me beat. A knee is so much worse, and you are more immobile than I was.

May things heal just fine for you, and that you can then make some new Happy Trails with your Monty.

Take care and stay healthy. While I might look like a wienie, I use gloves, kneepads and safety glasses for much of the prep and setup with my Monty. You'll have to add cleats.
