Towing behind Montana
I would like to tow a small trailer with a rzr on it. I will be legal in the states we will be traveling. I towed the same trailer behind my old Cougar. My question is the receiver on the Montana, it doesn’t appear to be up to the task. Has anyone towed with this receiver, and did they beef up said receiver?

You need to remove it and put a class 3 hitch on it.

It would benefit you to add a signature to your profile with the year and model of your Montana. That way any responders would be in a better position to help you.

The standard receiver that comes on the rear of a Montana is an accessory hitch. It is to be used only for bike racks or accessory racks with a maximum load of 300 lbs.

If still under warranty, recommend you speak with Lippert first.

The wimpy so called "hitch" that comes on our fivers is hard pressed to hold a small ice chest. If you look at it, you'll see there is nothing there to work with including what the hitch attaches to the frame with. Like mentioned, just remove what's there and start over if you're wanting to go ahead and double tow. As also mentioned "IF" anything frame related happens ... Keystone will point out the modified hitch and deny most any claim if not all claims. That being said ... I've double towed a double jetski trailer or a small a small squirt boat in and out of warranty behind all 3 of my Montana's since 2000. I did install a pretty stout hitch and have had no issues to date. There are several full timers and long timers on the MOC that have always had a dim view of double towing ... different lifestyles dictate different uses of an RV ... you have to pick your own crowd.

Let me also add, There is NO power connections at the factory installed hitch, which if towing another trailer is a MUST HAVE. It could be added very easily, when putting on a better hitch.

yes dump the factory hitch. have a custom quality hitch mounted.
wire correctly ( brakes if required).
length limits?
weight limits?
tv limits?
driver permits in order?
i have no problem with double towing as long as all legal factors are applied.
sad some here belive it is a crime to pull a second trailer. so be aware. but be legal so no problem in route. also some insurance providers might say no coverage if pulling a small tote trailer behind..

I've towers doubles on last two trailers including a Monty, built my own hitches and had no problems. You didn't mention how old your trailer is. I now have a 2018 and the hitch on it is pretty stout, and I've been towing my rzr with it for almost a year now. That being said, it total weight is about 1800-2000# and I make sure the hitch weight is around 200#. Good luck.

I have a 2007 Montana 3500RL. I had a hitch installed a it didn't come with one from the factory. I tow My 24 ft Reinell fiberglass Boat behind it and have never had an issue. It weighs almost 4000 lbs.

If it's legal in your license state, it's probably legal in all states. It's like having a person in your trailer when you're towing. That's not legal in all states but, if it's legal in your license state, it's legal in all 50.

Older Montanas (2012 vintage) came with a 1.25 x 1.25 receiver rated for 150 lbs. The weak link seems to be there the receiver assembly is attached to the I-beam.

I have a 2010 295RKD, it did not come with a rear receiver.
I would like to put one on it, mounting to the frame.
Where do you buy one at, U-Haul, comes to mind, any other suggestions?
Thx,
Barman54

Most any trailer hitch shop can build you one. Probably cheaper than U- Haul.

I'd recommend a metal fabrication shop. If you chose the right one, they could probably attach it to the 5er as well. Be aware that such a modification could void your warranty if it is still in effect.

forget u-haul. kids there are not worth there paychecks.
you need a custom fab shop, nothing off the shelf will fit.
so go to a metal fab shop for this, think a 4X4 custom place, not a catalog, or off the shelf parts mover. you need a true fab shop. where they can cut, bend, weld, and have staff that are cert welders, yes this is going to cost$$, but will not fail going down the freeway. thus loosing your load in traffic.

Just a guess but unless your tow vehicle is a Peterbuilt or equivalent, you’re probably over weight.

Do all Montana's have some sort of receiver hitch? My 2014 3100RL doesn't have one that I can see. The rear of the camper is enclosed and rounded. Looks like the hitch needs to come through the fiberglass round piece. Any ideas or any body that has done that???
Thanks,
Bill C

That is just not true. If you are pulled over in Washington for example and you are double towing you will be ticked and fined. It doesn’t matter what is legal in your home state.
