Big boom this morning, fellow dropped his fiver. Truck bed ugly, front cap of his fiver cracked, left corner to top. Unhappy camper.

I did that once....all except the cracked front cap. It happens. and the insurance company will say it was a "collision". What?

Wow, I can't imagine that gut-punch feeling, knowing it was (presumably) avoidable.

My B &W wouldn't prevent that. I try to look under the hitch from the back of the truck to make sure it is hitched. I didn't start that until I read here that people were dropping their campers on their trucks.

When I read on this forum that there are 2 types of campers, those that have dropped their 5th wheel and those that will, I bought a Butch's bar and always look at the jaws to make sure I didn't high-hitch. I know mistakes still happen, but you've got to minimize the possibilities.

I still love the Blue Ox (sorry they aren't being made) but Pasive is the only way to go. If you forget to check the locking jaws on the hitch you will forget to engage the Butches.

Last week, our friends dropped their RV while leaving a loop in a campground. Damaged truck and RV. I'm not sure they will ever camp again. .

A fellow camper last week asked me why I put a chock in front of wheel AFTER hooking up. I told him i was doing a tug test to triple check my work so not to drop my trailer!

I use the trailer brakes to do the tug test. It tells me two things.
1 the hitch is locked and 2 the trailer brakes are in fact working.
Best time to check the brakes is before leaving the park and not at the first stop light.

Basic 5th wheel hook-up protocol:

Tug test against applied trailer brakes or wheel chocks with landing gear only an inch or so off of the ground. Just do it, ....or maybe you will have to pay the piper someday if you don't.

I guess common sense isn't so common anymore.
