Refrigerator icing

This past summer we were out with our rig for 5 consecutive months with the refrig running all the time on the #4 setting and pretty full. We experienced a good deal of icing on the coils in the back of the refrig mostly on the right half of the coils. I did have a small battery operated fan in the bottom of the frig to circulate air as recommended by my dealer.

Is this normal icing for these refrigs, or are we setting the temperature control to high, or do I have a problem with the frig?

We have not had our setting at more than 2 ..temp stayed at 38 to 40 degrees.. We were told at a seminar at the Fall rally that you should not keep one of those fans in the fridge as it interferes with the natural circulation and that you should not line the shelfs or pack the fridge too tight..We took our fan out and will give that a try. We are sure the setting will vary with temp and humidity conditions..

Thanks for the feedback Rich. I will try eliminating the fan and buying another thermometer so I can try reducing the setting and just monitor temperature.

If you use a fan, set it so it blows up at the front [door side]. Air circulation is down the back, across the bottom, up the front and back to the fins at the rear. The ice is a result of opening the door in humid conditions. This is from the Dometic rep at the rally.

They also advised to defrost when 1/3 ice build up on fins. It really doesn't take long to do it and I find that once amonth keeps it running well.

dcowie,
Ours does that all the time. As stated above it is simple function of being in a humid climate. I think it is pretty normal for a build up of ice.
