Just a heads up to those that carry wood - DON'T do it in NY or New England. You will NOT be allowed to use either out of state wood (NE) or 50 mile radius of the CG (NY). There are some nasties that are devastating our woods here in the Northeast, just as in the West.

Decided to trade for a 2020 GMC 3500SRW, wanted the 10spd and the tow tech.

ordered it 6/27 took delivery 8/27, it rides better than the '18, tows better, far superior mirrors, and with the bigger factory size tires the load ratings are fine. (upgraded anyway to 4080# per tire)
They are good looking mirrors.

Several years ago I was in Wyoming on Union Pass at Lake of the Woods. I took pictures. A fourth of the trees were dead I went back the next year, took more pictures. When I compared pictures from the two years it was striking. Ninety five percent of the trees were dead in one year.

I'm assuming that your new truck is NOT bagged. It looks like your 5er is level, but your truck may be a little low. You have a about the same pin weight that we will have, or maybe a little bit higher than we are...

I am seeing more and more campgrounds allowing only the burning of locally sourced wood. In western Colorado there is a significant number of dead Aspens generally attributed to attack by non native beetles. I would not be surprised to see the prohibition of burning your own firewood at public campgrounds in the near future.

We're ready to roll. Always try to load some firewood since DW loves sitting around the campfire. Propane outdoor fireplace just might not have the same romance. Getting the TV weighed in a few. Will report back.

LOL. I can't load mine that full, because we have a slider. Need to allow for it moving around...

Either truck can tow your 5th wheel, but only one might handle your loaded hitch weight.

When you think of pin weight, you should know pretty well how much the stuff in your basement storage weighs, because most of that weight is on the hitch. Plus if you have a front bedroom, you have weight of stuff in the wardrobe, dressers, and stuff stored under the bed. That stuff mostly rests on the hitch. It would not surprise me if your loaded pin weight is 800 pounds more than your empty pin weight.
Not true. When I started loading tools in the front pass thru, I weighed everything. It came to ~200# and I loaded all along the back wall of the storage area. Look at the image. You will see that any tools added to the back wall adjacent to the convenience center has its weight split between the pin and the front axle.

No clothing is another matter! I cannot show you all the "stuff" DW takes on our trips and all of it is right over the pin. Our pin weight runs between 3050 and 3275.

How about shoes? My wife has since cut back a LITTLE but had 28 pair. I could show the cast iron pans she cannot be without. None of that Chinese junk either, made in the USA which is heaviest.

Just got back from the CAT scales. My front axle margin is ~700# for tires and axle. Since I recently ditched the OEM tires for the Bridgestone, I've increased my rating by nearly 800# in the rear. B4, the limiting factor was the tires but now the 9750 capacity rear comes into play. With my measurements just now, I have ~2000# margin in the rear when fully loaded with hitch, full fuel, two Texas folks, and 1000+# of firewood, 2 laptops and 20# of camera gear.

Jeez! Shoes! Didn't factor them in.... DW tries to get me to take 5 pair, 14 sweaters and who knows what else. I stopped trying to count her shoes long ago. Maybe the 300# of Christmas decorations in the rear garage will offset any discrepancy in the front math.

Correct, new truck is not bagged.
Truck ride height is perfect in my opinion, only one end of the overload springs is touching static. It rides and handles bridge joints with ease and comfort.

We live on 5 acres of trees. No way I'm buying unseasoned wood at 50 cents a stick. A tuck load would be $500

If caught in many counties with firewood from outside the county $500 would be cheap compared to fines and cost of of disposal. In a few places lawyer fees will at surpass $500. There is some nasty stuff places are trying to eliminate or contain.
We are on the road more than most and don’t want the aggravation so now use a propane fire and not only do we like it but so do CG neighbors.

Remember that you find the RV you like than match it the truck. That way you can have the RV you want and end up not having enough truck to tow it with.

Only time I have found you put the cart before the horse. LOL That being said the Yellow sticker in the door of the truck INCLUDES full of fuel and all fluids plus a 150# driver. After that then you add all the other things you add to the truck.

All this work with spread sheets mean nothing because like a previous poster said you don't load the same every time you go out. I use the max load numbers that the Kerystone put on the RV and use that number to pick my truck. Remember all the numbers on thr truck website are for base model trucks as far as load capacity goes. Not sure there can be a brakedown for higher trim levels because of all the option packages. That is why the yellow sticker in the door. GCVR doesn't change only load capacity. You can get a 1 ton with ether a 10,000# or 11,500# GVR and still have a SRW truck. A DRW has a much higher load capacity than 11,500. It's not that complicated.

Just saw these images on Chevy's website.

Point of reference:
  • This is a 2500 truck
  • The SMALLEST Fuzion made is 13,700 unladen
  • The SMALLEST Fuzion made has a pin weight of 3165

I suppose that you could tow a Fuzion with NOTHING in it, and only the driver, and no fuel in the tank. Doesn't sound like you're going to get very far.

At the end of the day, I think that stickers do matter, but I also think that it's not necessarily necessary to have a truck that is capable of maxing out your truck and RV.

It does surprise me that Chevy hooked up a HUGE RV to a 2500 though...

If they have a lot of weight in the back, they might get the pin wait down. I think the tow rating is over 17,000 lbs with the diesel... but with little difference in price (with diesel option) between a 2500 and 3500 SRW I would go with the 3500 any day. The squat on the truck appears to be more the 2500 should have, but hey what do I know.

But the squat makes it easier to get things in the bed

I added air bags, and they're great. No squat issue.
