On the back of a Mobil 1 5W40 can says.
Engineered to help extend engine life in modern turbo charged Diesel engines operating in severe applications.
Excellent thermal and oxidation stability reduces low temperature sludge build-up and high temperature deposits.
Mobil1 turbo truck 2W 40 is recommend for use in all super high performance diesel applications including low emission engine designs with exhaust gas recirculation.

All pickups offer only one diesel engine. I was referring to the larger Cummins in motor homes and heavy duty trucks.

mlh. I only take my F350 to a Ford dealer for oil and filter changes. For that matter all services on it are done there as well. I do very the oil change depending on the time of the year I am towing and how far I tow.

Summer I stick to the 5000 miles recommendation but in the late fall, winter and early spring I go to 6500 to 7500 mile between changes. The manual says up to 7500 not towing is ok. But that said if I tow it to say CA, a 325 mile trip I see no reason to be doing a change at 5000 miles. But in the fall when I tow say 7000 to 9000 miles I revert back to the 5000 or less changes.
makes me crazy trying to get this right. Sooo I think synthetic (Mobil 1) would give me a bit of leeway or safety margin if I were to go over the mileage limits.

Or am I over thinking this???

You are not over thinking this. When is the last time you heard of an engine failure due to oil probably like me never. Synthetic is better oil, no question. The question is do you won’t to spend the money to protect your engine better than regular oil. For me the answer is yes. I’ll spend the money knowing the engine would wear out the truck with regular oil.

Ok let me think a little about this. I bought a $67,000 dollar truck and I want to be cheap on oil? Or for that matter trying to save money by not doing the required maintenance? I always follow the book on maintenance and will continue to use Synthetic oil for the life of the truck.

I also use in the wife's Toyota.

I have been using nothing but Mobil 1 products since the mid-70s.
I had over 200K on a 2001 Chevy Monte Carlo with the 3.6L V6 and that engine didn't use a drop of oil between changes with no engine problems other than Computers dieing.

I totally agree with post 29 and 30. Synthetic is definitely better oil. I use it in my lawn mower.

I have a medal cutting band saw in my Machine shop. It’s used every day. When I first got it the bronze gear in it went bad in 5 years. I replaced it and added synthetic gear lube over 30 years ago. The last time I saw the gear a few years ago it was still like new.
I know this isn’t like a Diesel engine but it might show the difference between the two types of oil, and then again it might be due to other factors that I can’t see.

I know I'm a bit late to game here but 2 things to add.

1). I have 2 different Ford 6.0 diesels. I have, until this year, always used Mobil 1 Delvac or Shell Rotella T6 full synthetic with excellent results. I stopped using these oils due ot the new EPA mandated formulations of the additive packages for the new CK specification. Ford testing showed abnormal value wear using the new spec oils in all of the diesels they used including the 6.9 IDI, 7.3 IDI, 7.3 Powerstroke, 6.0 Powerstroke, 6.4 Powerstroke, and the 6.7 Powestroke. which brings me to point 2.

2). If you can find the old CJ-4 spec oils without the CK spec on the label or find the new Ford spec on CK oils, then go full synthetic. It will be better at not sludging your engine even when towing as the full syn oils don';t break down with the heat as quickly as dino oils do. I talked to representatives from Mobil and Chevron Delo at the Farm Progress show this summer. Chevron told me they were not going to do anything about Fords findings. Mobil told me they were working on correcting the additive package and getting the Ford spec certification.

I personally have been using the Motorcraft 15w40 oil this summer in both. I'll switch to either full syn or syn blend shortly for winter. There are lots of syn blends that already meet Ford specs and a few full syn oil now on the list. Do a google search on API CK and Ford.

As the above post states, use ONLY a series 4 oil in a Diesel engine. Mobile Delvac is a semi synthetic and it also comes in a full synthetic. Shell Rotaella T is a great oil. Personally I wouldn’t use Dello 400 in anything.

Thanks Mike
Mike is definitely correct. Ford does NOT recommend using CK 4 oil in their Diesel engines and as far as I could find CK 4 oil does not properly protect the Cummings engines either. The problem as far as I could find the CK 4 oil does not have enough phosphorus in it. Phosphorus levels have been reduced from 1000 pp million to 800. Ford recommended still using the older spec CJ 4 oil. Or their new spec WSS M2C117 F1. Most oil manufacturers are working to bring their oil up to this standard.
This is part of what Ford says about this oil:
To insure you protect your Ford diesel engine use Motorcraft Super Duty Motor meeting API CJ-4. A Motorcraft Super Duty Motor meeting WSS-M2C171-F1 will be available 1st quarter 2017. Check this Motorcraft website for diesel motor oils approved by Ford Motor Company for servicing Ford diesel engines; https://www.fcsdchemicalsandlubrican...ct=%5BMotor%20 Oil%5D

IMHO - synthetic reduces friction - friction seats an engine in. So I would break it in well - 4 me on a diesel 20-30k miles. My question- what do you really get by switching? I switched a lawn mower over and it started burning oil. Been trying to get it back ever since.

can`t make this stuff up

I should add this to the discussion I've used Rotella T6 5-40 synthetic since it came out exclusively in my diesels full time all weather. The last Blackstone labs analysis I had done (175,000 miles) came back and said my test showed less than what would be expected in wear chemicals in the oil for an engine with that many miles on it and that I could extend my oil change intervals if I wanted. This was at my usual 7000 mile oil change interval when the sample was drawn. The truck was retired some years ago and is used for towing only or to help one my kids move. Get a lab test done on your oil it will tell you if your using the right oil and doing things right.
Well unless your of the opinion..............
