11% Grades on Route 163 in Utah. Any problems?

Hello MOC,

In late April, we will be driving from Monument Valley, UT to Moab, UT along Route 163.

Using the Allstays app on my iPad I am seeing a few instances of up to 11% Grades on Route 163.

We have a Ford F-350 in tip-top shape pulling our Montana 3400RL. Our weight is normal. Our tires are inflated properly.

There are a lot of campgrounds around so obviously RVers are driving here. Anyone have any issues driving these grades?

Other than being aware and driving low and slow does anyone have any insights to this stretch of road?

Many thanks.
~Brett

A group of us went that way last year. There was a variety of rigs: motorhomes towing F250 or SUV; 5th wheels of 32' to 41' towed mostly by Fords and a couple of Dodges. We went the Hwy-163 / Hwy-191 routes from Monument Valley to Moab. To tell the truth, I never noticed a grade issue. We had a snow flurry near Moab which was interesting. But the road was good and scenic.

You will be fine.

WOW a 11% grade, can't even imagine it. Guess I'm kind of spoiled living in the east. The steepest grade I have ever encountered is a 6%er on I77 heading up through Big Walker Mountain in W.Va./Va..

We have pulled some 10% grades with our 08 6.4L Ford .We had to pay attention to our after market gauges EGT, Boost, Trans temp and coolant temp and slow to keep within safe limits but never had a problem.

My favorite hill is the west side of the Big Horns in Wy. 8 miles of 8% and 10 miles of 10%. My old truck ran hot (on any hill when outside temp is over 85) but didn't overheat on this hill, tho it was above the normal range.
Oh, the mountainous driving books call this the 'Oh My god' hill.

We took my brothers 454, 3500 Chevy up there, had the undercoating dripping from under it. Before that we're going up Union Pass at about 9000 feet easing along at 10 MPH and my brother told his son in law to speed up. His son in law said foot is flat on the floor it's doing all it will do. That is when my brother decided to buy a diesel. When we got home he bought a 06 Dmax.

mlh, did you go all the way over the Union Pass? We drove about 13 miles up - first 10 are paved, as I recall. Was early June and there were snowbanks across the road. Oh, I wasn't towing either.

Mosquitos I have been through Union Pass rd several times. The best way on Union Pass is from Dubois. I've camped up there in July, August, September and October. The best time to camp is in September. The billions and billions of mosquitos are gone. The weather then should be nice warm days with a morning low in the twenties. A nice place camp is about a mile beyond the second cattle guard after you pass over the top of the mountain there is a big forest sign at the cattle guard and the Union Pass bronzes plaques are on the right just on the hill.
I wouldn't try to take my camper much beyond this point.
All the species of game are on Union Pass, brown and black bear, deer, elk, moose, antelope and rock chuck. Take your risking pole all the little creeks and lakes are full of trout.
Just incase you are wondering yes I love Union Pass. I think it's the prettiest place in Wyoming. There is more game up there than in Yellowstone thanks to the wolves.

Drove that way last October, pulling fiver with jeep in tow. No issues just let your TV do the work. Ditto on Mexican Hat. Know your limitations and you will do just fine.

Enjoy the drive!
