Best Tires for Tow Vehicle?

My new GMC 3500 HD Denali came with Michelin tires. A knowledgeable friend (transported trailers for a living) said they will wear out quickly and suggested Cooper Discovery ST's. Curious what people here like?

I have the Michelin tires on my F250 with 20 inch wheels. This is the third set with 79000 miles on the truck.

I went from the factory tires to Coopers 5 years ago. Don't remember if they were the Discovery ST's though. I did get around 70000 miles out of them but I couldn't stand the howl that came out of them at 50MPH. Bothered me the whole time. I did like that they were made in the USA though.

I do like Michelin tires for cars but they don't really have a good tread pattern for mud and snow or off road. I've never run them on any truck but I probably wouldn't worry about the ones you currently have until they need replacing.

I recently changed my wheels and tires and went from the factory 17" rims on my 2008 GMC Sierra 3500HD to 20" rims. I changed tires to the Nitto Ridge Grapplers. They are also made in the USA. Pretty quiet tire at all speeds and no howl but it still has a pretty aggressive tread. The load rating is better than the factory OEM tires. It's really hard to say what tire is the best. As far as I'm concerned if it has the load and speed rating you need and doesn't drive you crazy it's a good tire. Tires tend to wear out quicker on trailers than vehicles too especially if the trailer or wheel is out of alignment.

leave them alone. you have fine tires. waste of money now! but when they do wear out in the coming years then look at other tires.

I also think you have fine tires. Use them and don't worry about it.

I have the 20Ē Michelinís on my F350 and they are fine. 25000 miles on truck and they still look like new. I do rotate them every 5000 miles which helps with wear.

I think tire wear depends on how you drive more then anything. I live in a rural area, but close to a hi way, consequently probably 75% of my driving is on the hi way basically in a straight line or gentle curves. I usually get about 70,000 miles out of a set of tires, OEM or not. I have friends and relatives that live in town, where you are constantly going around 90 degree corners and also stopping and then accelerating again, who are happy to get 40,000 miles. Least you think that I just baby my tires, I seldom rotate and love to feel the g-forces when going around curves. I do however keep an eye on air pressure.

My F250 came with Continentals and i got 50,000 miles out of them. I just didn't like the close tread because it would pick up small rocks. My new tires have a bigger tread but pick up bigger rocks Sheesh. going with something else next time. These are Good Years with Kevlar

How many times have you been traveling down the highway and a pickup passes you and the tires sound like a airplane engine going by. Yep best tires on the market he will say. The factory spends tons of money doing research on the best tire for the purpose or vehicle at hand . They are not going to use a inferior tire that will wear prematurely or makes noise. It will make them look bad in the customers eyes. Michelin`s are top dog in the tire industry and are used by many if not most manufacturers. My new 350 Dually came with them and are very quit,. The last truck `06 came with them and I got 55,000 before changing to a cheaper tire Firestone truck tire and they where a lot noisier so learned my lesson. The guy that burns through tires because of the ridiculous amount of traveling he does isn`t going to buy an expensive tire. He well may get better mileage with his brand but it`s a harder rubber compound and noisier for sure. I`ll take the Michelin`s every time. YMMV

I have always been a big Michelin fan and love them on our car. I love the way they sound and handle on the truck. I have never been able to get more than 40k on 60k mile tires. Michelin adjusted two sets of them for not meeting mileage warranty but said no more. I need a new set and will look for another brand. My tire guy is suggesting the Saliums. Based on feedback from this forum I may just give them a shot.

I’ve tried to save a few dollars before with Coopers and Firestone’s, but regretted it when they started making noise. I will always stay withe Michelin’s.

We have Michelin’ discovery on our F-350 dually now a very good tire. We previously had coopers with no problems. The OEM Ford tires also no problems.

I wasn't a big fan of sailun tires but I figured why not try them, so far I really like them on the truck. They were a noticeable improvement over the stock tires.

I am not a fan of the Michelin AT's, but have installed Michelin Defenders on my last three trucks. Very quiet and good mileage.

The original tires on my truck were Continentals. They were good for ~45K miles but the traction was horrible at the end. The second were Firestones - and they were shot, about bald, at 40 K miles. I went the optional size, 275/70x18, Michelin Defenders for added capacity and hoped for better wear. At 40K they are at 9 and 11 32nds from the original 13.5 32nds. They shold last one more year. I'm happy. I did put Kumhos on the last truck and they too worked out well vs the OEM Continentals - but not quite in the same league as the Michelins.


I'm not a lover of AT tires. Most are noisy and they do hurt fuel mileage plus my off roading these days is a CG dirt or gravel road

My 2018 Silverado 3500 SRW came with the Goodyear Wrangler SR-A. I replaced them with Falken Wildpeak A/T3W before last winter, much better tires all around. They are both E Rated but the Falken is over built, a lot heavier and stiffer.
