Montana Height?

I realized yesterday as we are out long timing that I do not know the exact height of the Monty. I made it under a 13' 10" with a good guess. I can't measure it right now. We have vent covers on most of the air vents which probably add some height. Can anyone give me some idea what they have measured for heights?

Thanks

I believe our camper stands about 12’6” I hesitate strongly to try and go under anything 13’ or less just to have somewhat of a buffer.

With front AC ours is 13' 3". So anything under 13' 6" (standard truck height) is a no go. Good luck.

Ours is also 13'3".The high point is actually the vent guard over the bathroom vent. The front A/C on ours is actually on the down slope of the roof.

After adding the front A/C, ours is 13'4".

We have a front A/C and I measured it at 13'3", just like eveyone else. Don't think I'd take it under anyting less than 13'9" or so without first taking a look. Repaved roads can add a couple of inches and they don't necessarily update the signs!

I have done nothing on the roof since purchasing our Monty. It is documented as 12'9" and we do not have any vent cover, just the folded down television antenna. Adding a vent cover or the second AC will definitely change that. A quick check on the Montana website states RKassl's Monty is the same height. But again, this assumes no roof additions at the highest point.

Most roads near underpasses are usually regraded to keep the height under bridges, but as afk15e points out, can you really trust that happens all the time?

I am not nearly as concerned about public roads and bridges but who knows what happens in private or commercial lands being modified, or some refueling stations. Fortunately, I hope I keep remembering to look up in addition to front, back, left and right.

On secondary roads I'd be more concerned with low hanging tree limbs. More than once taking a short cut I have seen some very low hanging trees. In every case I was able to take the center of the road without a problem.

Our front AC is the highest at 12'10". I thought I needed 13'3" until I measured again. It was an interesting experience to go under the covering at US Border crossings into Alaska as well as into US form Canada (near Glacier NP). The sign said 13' clearance. So, the first time, I pulled into the truck lane, that caused a grippy trucker to stop by and give me some unwanted advice! I managed to not respond even though he deserved it! So next time, I pulled thru the 13' clearance with no problem. My question, it sure looked alot higher than 13'--maybe the US Gov lawyers made the sign state a lower clearance to avoid any legal issues! I still get a little nervous when I see the 13"+ clearances even though I have passed thru all of them without incident.

Timandsusan,
If you go through Canadian customs leaving Skagway on the Klondike Highway make sure you're in the truck and bus lane. Cover height is only 12 feet. We had a truck camper ahead of us and I didn't see the height sign until he drove off. A on-the-ball Canadian custom's agent stopped traffic and let me pull over.

Ours was 12' 10" with just one AC and measure the same with the second. I had some doubts about that but when the rig was in the dealer's service bay I was able to get high enough to also eyeball the rig and, sure enough, the second AC is no hgiher than the vent covers over the regular vents and the fantastic fan. Our second AC is a Coleman but is not a lowboy type. I haven't taken it under anything lower than 13' 6", so far, and hope I never have to. I did the measurement with the rig hitched to the truck as it won't necessarily measure the same when set up in an RV park.

Interesting point Steve! If the height of the rig at a factory is measured at the level, most TVs when towing carry the RV with a slight upward angle, at least I heard they should, and with my air bags, I do. That would increase the height an inch or so. Something to keep in mind.

I heard you should carry your rig as level as possible to equally distribute the weight between the axles. At least that is what the folks at MorRyde say and when they installed my independent suspension they measured the front and back to make sure it was even. When they got through there was, maybe, an inch difference between the front and back frame once it was hooked to the truck. As Art says, height should always be measured while hooked to your TV. No need for weight police as this is a very serious subject that everyone should know about.....at least that is my opinion......

After several tape measuring sessions with Monty hitched and unhitched I have established my height at 13'6" or 4.2 meters. I have to use the meters because I'll will be taking my Monty back to Puerto Vallarta in October where I live and work during the winter. I do have the second air conditioner and two Max vent covers. I also stick a piece of blue tape on my dash with these heights marked on it to constantly remind me of the heights. While heading up the coast in Oregon this year I came upon a height marker in a tunnel indicating 11'4" on the extreme edges. After a panic stop I was able to run the center line without any opposing traffic. I really don't know how I will deal with the trees as I drive south in Mexico to Puerto Vallarta, so I hope to follow a slow 18 wheeler.

Top of mine measures at 13' 3". The garage door is 14' and being able to measure down from that gave me the exact height while hooked to the truck. Highest point on mine is the MaxAir cover over the fantastic fan in the kitchen. I do have the Dometic Low-Profile 13.5 A/C up front as well.

But did you measure this while it was on the TV? It might be higher in that case.

I like Tony's idea about a sticky in the TV for quick reference.

Funny thing Art, when I read what Montana Sky wrote, I can clearly see where he has the trailer HOOKED to the TRUCK.

We don't have a front A/C but do have vent covers on the bath and kitchen (not on the bedroom). I measured ours at 12" 10" at the highest point (kitchen vent cover), hooked up and on level ground. We will use the lucky number "13" as our limit when judging clearances, but will be cautious for anything under 13' 6" especially on secondary or tertiary roads. OBTW, our rig might not look level front to back but it is level over the bed rails of the truck. So which is more important?
