New vent fan Installed

Sorry I had to remove the instant image links. It was taking too long to open this page. Phil

This was a successful weekend project! I would reccomend it to anyone.

Fan on eBay with shipping for $90. This was a savings of over $165 retail from the manufactures distributors. Nothing was wrong with the fan. I love a bargain even though my better half banned me from eBay.

Inadequate vent fan before removal.

Old maxxair vent removed

Old vent ready to be removed and put out to pasture.

The vent is out, but there is lots of putty which still needs to be removed. For this were going to need some goof off and elbow grease.

An hour after I started removing the putty the job is finally finished. I really wanted to use a putty knife on this but that is not an option on a rubber roof. The goof off worked really well but you still have to use a LOT of elbow grease. I used about 12 old rags so be sure to have plenty of old rags on hand to get this sticky stuff off.

Here the new vent is installed with the mounting brackets for the Maxxair vent cover. I used a lot of putty. Probably too much. I put 1 strip under the new fan assembly, one strip on the top before the screws were installed and then another strip over the top of the screws after installation. I also put the vent brackets on so they would be covered with putty as well. After this much work I wanted to make sure the vent wasn’t going to leak.

The new fan is installed and working properly at all speeds. The vent is opening and closing like it should so now its time to cover this baby up and protect her form the elements.

The completed project after the new Maxxair vent is installed. Notice you don’t see the excessive amounts of putty with the new cover installed.

With the new vent cover on sale at camping world this project cost $160.00 total. I spent 4 hours on this but I could have finished it in 2 hours. I wanted to make sure the surface was clean, dry and ready before I put the new putty on so I let it dry for over an hour. This was a nice Saturday project. The best part is I won’t be questioned about it until we get to the lake but then it won’t matter because the fan moves so much more air from the water closet. If no one hears from me after easter weekend call for help. I may be at the bottom of the lake.lol

Looks great Okie Guy! Just finished replacing the bathroom fan on mine two weeks ago with the Fan-Tastic Vent 6000. The bathroom gets a little tricky as it sets at an angle and you have to cut down the trim ring.

Phil--thanks for the good info on this project. Can I ask a few newbie questions since a project like this is totally new to me.

First, which vent are you replacing here? If it's the one next to the shower, can you tell me where the power comes from as I'm thinking of putting a fan in the vent next to the shower and am not sure how to get power to it.

Second, just what type of putty did you use in putting in the new fan? And just what is the "goof off" that you used to remove the old putty? Also, is it alwways necessary to remove all the putty, or only if it is old and/or of questionable quality? I'd be installing this fan in a new Monty so the putty up there is new.

Appreciate any guidance you can provide.

Brad, I had to take a second look on Sunday and ended up cutting the inside ring cover down some more. It is hard to know how much to take off.

David, I replaced the vent inside the toilet closet. There was a small 12 volt fan in the vent already so the wiring was laready in place. If your vent is located near the comode closet then you can run a wire through the rafter up to the vent hole. The Rafters are made of square tubing with an oval hole ever so often and you should have enough room to get wire to the fan location. As for the putty you need to get a new roll of putty before you start. Putty is designed to be used one time. If you remove your old vent and install a new vent with the same putty it may not seal, water starts leaking in and it goes downhill from there. I bought my putty at camping world for $3.99 per roll. I used two rolls. It can be located in the section with vent covers, vent lids and fantastic fans.

goof off...well its in every farm kids must have tool box along with WD-40, Duct Tape and Bailin Wire. Here is a link to this fantastic product.

Yup - so much for the measure twice, cut once theory. I removed and cut the trim 4 separate times just to make sure I didn't cut too much. On the Montana the bathroom is on an extreme angle so at first I wasn't even sure it would fit, but it fit fine.

Phil--thanks for the info. Of course, spending several hours scrubbing off putty is not my idea of a "goof off" activity. LOL!!!!

looks nice Brad. I wanted to get that model but I have the northern breeze in the kitchen and didn't want two different types of fans in the unit.
