Proactive A/C work

Texas you are hot! Working our way home to FL after a few months out. Wondering if there’s anything we can/should do proactively to make sure we don’t lose air conditioning. Should we replace it every couple of years or X hours to make sure it doesn’t die on us suddenly on days like these? That would be bad!

There's nothing you can do to predict how long an air conditioner will work. Yes, the air conditioner IS a mechanical device that uses electricity, has a bunch of wires, a few items of electronics, and every item is subject to failure. One unit may run for 30 years and another not even work correct when leaving the factory.

If you air conditioner is working, and working well right now, don't mess with it. There's nothing you can adjust, you cannot add coolant, (they are sealed), and about the only thing you can do is keep the fins sprayed out every year and clean the filters on your ceiling inside the coach.

They require air-flow and if they do not get the air flow, they will ice up. If that happens, all you have to do is turn it off for a couple hours so the ice will thaw and then turn it back on. Make sure there is no obstructions for air flow (on the roof, or on your ceiling vents inside).

There are many YouTube videos discussing RV air conditioner maintenance procedures. Watch a few of them and that is about the best you can do. Just remember, the more you fiddle with them, the more likely you'll break something. And that is what you are attempting to avoid.

I have done absolutely nothing except clean the filter on the coach ceiling, and spray down the fins on the coil on the roof. That's it. Nothing more. 4 campers and 25 years and not a single problem.

To improve air flow, I cut out every other fin on the ceiling registers.
Recently I discovered the return air ducts were not taped closed properly. I could put 1 finger through the gap into the attic on the back unit and three fingers through the gap into the attic on the forward unit.

Taped it all up good and tight

Like Daryles said remove the intake covers and seal everything. Just removing the ceiling registers will help air flow. We have the same unit and I'm going to be replacing my vents with the old style. Go to youtube, lots of information there.
