L P DETECTOR CONCERN ?!?!

One night we were awoken with the LPD going off, jumped out of bed to check things out. Went out to check the gas and it was off, after about 45 min. we thought it was faulty, put a fan blowing on it and it didn't help. The smell was getting BAD about like sewer gas, pulled the detector out, went to the shop to check it out, checked out GOOD??? So put it back in, but pulled the fuse for the rest of the night about 3 HR's. The next day, we vented the rig with fans, still smelling like sewer gas, it would come and go for the next two days. Finally day 3 the smell was so bad 5 A.M. went out to check it out, the smell was stronger in the front of the rig, with flashlight in hand shined the light on the BATTERIES one was boiling out gas and was so hot you couldn't touch it, all the water was boiled out. So shut off converter, and purchased new battery, no more smell, and no more headaches. MORAL OF THE STORY... LP DETECTOR WORKS ON BATTERY GAS ALSO!!

Good info! I wouldn't have thought of a battery as the source of the smell. Did your converter check out OK?

Yes, the converter checked out OK. Now I have to put things back together, like the under belly cover, and the wall in the basement, because we thought it was a sewer leak.

I watch over our one 12v battery, checking it every couple of months for levels and adding distilled when required. I have changed this schedule to once every three weeks now as I noticed the pendant lights over the sink were brightening more often than I had ever seen. Check of the battery showed that the three most rearward cells were lower than front three. No plates showing, but low. Now, it is very obvious that cells 4/5 are going lower than #6 on checks. So the battery is heading south faster than six months ago. So I am now in think mode as to stay with single 12, double 6, or go to agm. Don't boondock, so that isn't a factor. As the saying goes "decisions, decisions". John

Yes, as you have discovered the LP detector will detect a number of types of gas. A valuable side benefit.
