Richmond Va area

We FINALLY head out to fulltime travel next Sunday. We will be leaving NJ in the morning taking 301 through DE, MD and VA. Near Richmond we will pick up I95. In that area, are we better staying on 95 and taking the 295 loop?

The loop will take you around Richmond and out of the city proper. Be careful. though. One bridge on 295 will make the truck and trailer rock and roll. The seams in the concrete are spaced just right to cause a harmonic effect with the truck and trailer axles.

I have used both ways many many times. Finally decided that the 295 although somewhat longer is the preferable route

The speed limit through Richmond is 55 and 60. The speed limit on 295 is 65. It is 40 miles through and 60 miles around 295. I will only take 295 in rush hour traffic or if I am coming down 301.

I recommend you take route 3 / 301 south in Maryland and bypass DC or 495 DC beltway.

Just past Ft. AP Hill you can take 301 south or take 207 for 13 miles over to I95 where there is a Flying J and other fuel stop then I95 south or you can just take 301 south to 295 and 295 around.

I normally fuel up at Flying J much cheaper than MD. and one of the better prices in the area.

So you have both opinions.

Hope this helps

We, too, use 301S to avoid 95 near DC and get onto 95 at exit 104, after topping off w/cheap fuel at Flying J (west side of 95) so we don't have to buy fuel in NC. Depending on the time of day, we usually go right through Richmond on 95. No big deal, usually. Have fun and be safe. Wave to us as you go by on 301-50 after you cross the Chesapeke Bay bridge. We're just north of exit 28.

We live outside of Richmond. I always take 295, it is longer but there is a bumpy stretch however the traffic is busy in the morning and evening rush hour. I avoid 95 at all costs, the traffic is miserable around DC and Baltimore. We take 301 or even 81 whenever possible.
