Mattress

Hi, we're FINALLY going to be getting our 3400 in Late Feb or Early March. I've tried to do a search on mattresses and keep coming up without a match. Do any of you use (or have tried) the Bear Air Mattress (similar to the sleep by the numbers mattress, but designed for RV's) or the actual sleep by the numbers mattress? We've had a waterbed for the past 18 years and I have fibromyalgia and back problems whenever we stay at a motel. In looking at the RV's we have "tested" the beds and they all seem so stiff and hard I'm afraid they will aggravate my condition (but I know I can't have a waterbed, LOL). DH says, check with the Montana Forum to see if there are any opinions on air mattresses out there. Thanks, Sue C

We, like many here, addded a memory foam pad (from Costco)to the RV mattress. I think it's very comfortable, despite my back problems.

We have the bear bed.Been using it for about 6 months. It is every bit as good as the sleep number bed and less expensive. The sell point was that the compressor for the bear bed is built into the mattress.

Thanks, Bill and Mariana, we've thought of the memory foam, too. Thanks, too, to Rich and Helen. 2 additional questions for you. Do you have the memory foam option on your Bear Bed and which "depth" did you choose? Also, do you actually camp with a Cockatoo? If so, how do you and your neighbors cope with the "evening call home" screaming? LOL (can you tell we've had a Cockatoo?) Thanks, Sue C

We have the sleep comfort queen size and love it
I extended the platform a few inches and it fits fine, we cn close the slide with no problems. The Bear bed is also good, and the meory foam topper works for many. We tried the foam and it just didn
t work for my back problems (twice broken, once fixed and bonespurs and arthritis and stenosis (nerve damage). Good luck, don't be afraid to lay down on the bed, and toss and turn and scrunch up and all that stuff.

We did not get the memory foam option as it is a add on and you can get it at anytime we thought we would see if we needed it...we don't.We got the deluxe bear 12 inch mattress queen size it is the same size , 60X80 as the OEM mattress.. The bird has been camping with us since we got it @ 11 years ago..It is a good camper. They do scream but it is scared to death of a pink noodle and will shut up at the sight of it.

You will definitely want to change the mattress. We did this on our previous 5er as well. We purchased just a regular mattress (high end) for ours and it is great. I also have back problems but we are both side sleepers so a regular mattress that is good and firm works for us.
Happy trails........................

We have the Deluxe Bearbed at home and really like it. We have a 2" foam topper on the OEM mattress in the RV. When we get to go fulltime we will probably use a Bearbed in the coach as well.

We have the Select Comfort Full Queen and just love it. We have model 5000 and love it. The higher the model number the thicker the topping. What is really nice is that you have a 30 day trial, no questions asked.

Here's an article written by a person who has tried a Bear Bed. Seems to be an impartial opinion.

Looks like the Bear Bed must be getting popular. The article cites a list price under $500. and the cheapest model now lists at $619.

Actually, the one they cite in the article is now $749. That's just a tad bit of an increase.

We have a Bear Bed and have had it for 5 years. We did not get the mem. foam and it has been fine. We have had to replace one of the chambers due to a leak, it was a manufactory problem, replaced under warranty. We tried all kinds of air mattresses before finding the Bear bed. Good luck.

When we purchased our new 3075RL we knew we wanted to replace the mattress. The choices that fit the Montana were so limited we finally ended up purhcasing from the Original Mattress Factory where they took a standard King size mattress and cut off 6 inches so it would fit when the slide came in. This cut only cost me an additional $50 or so. You can try out their mattresses at their showrooms and pick what fits you best. Here is their web site, they appear to only be in the East but there may be others in the West. http://www.originalmattress.com/

When replacing the mattress, what do you do about the angled corners? We looked at the 3400 and both outside corners are angled off to allow for walking space around the bed. We figured a mattress would need to be custom made?

The OEM Mattress on our delivered in May 0f 06 was a standard 60X80 queen size mattress. You can get one special made I know that bear bed will do that and I think the Original matteress factory. We got the 60x80 Bear bed Mattress and it fits ok in the 3400..The king may be different.

we have the 3400 and the corners of the mattress are NOT cut off. we can go into any matress store and buy a replacement, which we have to do since the OEM Montana mattress is junk... sure wish they had a mattress upgrade when ordering..

Ahh - perhaps yet another change. The king bed option on the new 3400RL is angled (cut off) at both corners to allow for walking clearance in front of the angled sink and the closet. The wood has a 45 degree angle on each corner and so does the mattress.
