Has anyone put a regular mattress in their RV?
Just wondering if you can replace the mattress in the RV with your home mattress set. We have a queen size in our home and I realize the queen size in the RV is a little smaller. Has anyone tried/done this?

We put our queen sized mattress in our Monty when we started full timing. Makes for much better sleeping.

Thank you. Did you put just the mattress in or the mattress and box springs as well??

We put a regular queen mattress in ours - just the mattress not the springs as they are not needed. Then in our model and year it was a little bit long so we had a regular mattress made that is shorter. Ed is 6' but usually sleeps on his side so he doesn't notice the shorter mattress. If you buy one for it, you can get whatever quality you want and anyone would be better than the one that is in there.
Happy trails..........................

One of the first things we did after deciding to go full time in our Montana was to switch out our queen mattress with our mattress from the stick house. There was no need to use the box springs. That would be too heavy, and you'd never be able to access the storage under the bed. The mattress was about 2-3 inches longer, but not so long that it impeded the closing of the bedroom slide, but it is tight.

Ours is a king. We did not replace the mattress but purchased a 4" memory foam topper and put on top. Sleeps just as good or maybe better than the bed in our stick house. Something you might want to consider.

Like the others, didn't use the box springs. Like Melnjoy said, you wouldn't be able to get to the storage under the bed if you used the box springs. We haven't paid attention to how close the mattress comes when we pull in the slide. Just know it doesn't hit the dresser.

Since there isn't room to install a boxspring you may want to look for a mattress made for a platform bed (most are made of foam) that would not void the warranty. We found that alot of mattresses broke down on platform beds.

We replaced the OEM mattress in our 06 3400 with a stick house mattress. We found one at the mattress shop that did not have a matching box springs - brand new for $149. We also installed a 2" memory foam top. It now sleeps just like what we have at home - much better than the OEM junker.
Several things we found out. Mattress thickness is important - do not bother with the pillow top kind - they are two thick. Do not go with the fancy foam mattresses. They are much too heavy. Be concerned that the home mattresses are typically much better contructed - especially on the sides - than the typical RV mattress which can literally be rolled up. This stouter construction of the stick house mattresses caused an interference problem in that the corner of the mattress hits up against the lavoratory door, as did the OEM mattress, when the slide is brought in. However the stouter construction does not as easily conform as the OEM mattress. We thus push the new mattress towards the front closet before bringing in the bedroom slide, thus providing more clearance.

In our previous Montana we put in a home mattress and put a 2 inch memory foam on top of that. In our current Montana we went instead with a home type pillowtop mattress. The pillowtop adds about the additional thickness as did the memory foam on the other one. On ours, the fitted sheets fit just fine.
On the first Montana we needed the shorter queen, known apparently as an "rv queen". The mattress people built it at our request to rv size plus two inches at no additional charge. We had determined it could go two more inches without problem. Our current Montana comes standard with a full length mattress so our replacement is a standard home size queen and works fine.

We replaced the factory mattress with a shortened home mattress. It is very comfortable.

Select Confort for over a year now. Added 5 inches to the base of the bed and put a 80 inch "super queen" in. Just need to remember to air down if going to higher elevation.

Thanks everyone for the great tips. Not sure what we will do when the time comes but at least we know we have options.

We had one made to order for our 3295; when we purchased the 3400 it had a king bed which we had the dealer switch out to our Queen and then sweet Virgil (Sunshine) cut off the excess board around the bed, and we gained 4 inches on each side (about) so it has worked well - the King mattress would have been the same thing - discarded and/or exchanged.

We took our Select-Comfort mattress out of the stick house, had to replace the board where it hinges with an additional 4" and added a strap to help lift it up, still clears the dresser when in.

We installed a foam cover from Costco It made a world of difference in the mattress. It did add about three inch's in high. It made the sheets fit better as the original mattress was skinny.

We put a queen Denver Mattress on our bed in our 3295. It sticks out at the foot about 3 inches. We don't need to lift it for the slides. It is up against the dresser with the slide in.

I have a queen size matress in my Mountaineer Travel Trailer. I have to lift up the bed when I slide in the bedroom or the matress will hit the sink. If you have to do this make sure your hinges are replaced with the "piano hinge."
Hope this helps.
