Hitch Newbie

I, hopefully, will be buying an 04 3670 here soon but I am new to the 5th wheel world. I shot high with the TV, 06 Slverado 3500 LLY and looking for help in the hitch/brake controller area. Since I saved a lil on the 5th, I thought of an AirRide hitch but am i shooting high again? I want to avoid the bouncing of the trailer and the TV. Does the Montana have electric/hydraulic brakes? Thanks!!!

alremc,
Welcome to the MOC! You are going to get alot of great ideas, opinions and information here. When it comes to answering your questions I have a feeling each of us is going to tell you that what we each use is best. With that said I will try to answer your questions with my opinions.
1). I have the Tekonsha Voyager brake controller and really like it.
2). I run the Pullrite Superglide hitch for my shortbed, I really like the Pullrite hitches and would suggest looking at a Super 5th hitch for your new Silverado.
3). I do not have an air ride hitch as I have not found a reason to purchase one. Again that is my opinion.
4). To the best of my knowledge the Montana has electric brakes.
Again, welcome to the group.

Welcome. As has already been mentioned, you will get many opinions about hitches. We have the Trailer Saver Air Ride hitch and we have no jostling, bouncing or jerking. We went the way of the Draw-Tite and Reese hitches for a couple years until I decided that I wanted a little more comfort while traveling. I've found that I'm not near as tired when I reach my destinations.

The air ride hitches are pricey. But, I believe you get what you pay for.

I have to second "ols". I have a Travel-Aire Hitch and it made a lot of difference for us. It, kinda, gives me a good feeling when I look in the mirror and watch the tailgate bouncing and the 5'er just floating along. Just another Opinion !

As you can see in my signature, I, like Montana Sky, have the PullRite SuperGlide hitch. For anyone who has a shortbed, it does all but gaurantee peace of mind. I pulled the Montana down to a local dealer/reapairmanlast weekend to do a “laundry list” of small fixes, and when he saw the SuperGlide, he was quite complimentary of the hitch. He indicated that no one to whom he had talked that owned the SuperGlide regretted having gone that route.

Yes, they are electric brakes. If you need an aftermarket brake controller, in my opinion the Tekonsha Prodigy is the best available.

Dave (Montana Sky), I thought you have the Prodigy rather than the Voyager. Am I wrong about that?

Steve,
I have always had the Voyager, was having some problems getting the Voyager adjusted properly and had thought about getting the Prodigy. I took my truck/rv back into the dealership and had them adjust a few things on it. Has worked out great ever since. (Come to find out, the problem was me. I was moving the wrong setting on it.)

You might do some towing before you decide to upgrade to a air ride pin box system, having said that we love our TrailAir Pin box and would recommand it any time.

Northstar,

I'm with you on that TrailAir. I will never be without it!

alremc,

You can see what I use in my signature. It all works well for me. I do like the Prodigy brake controller because of it's ease to program. Several times a month, I am hooking up to different units from different manufactures around the Elkhart County area. They range in weight from 6000 pounds to 16000 pounds. It's great to find the power setting I need to make all of the brakes work efficiently without over working any of them and still be able to stop on a dime.

For a fraction of the cost of a air hitch I installed the MOR/ryde Rubber Pin Box which has taken care of back and forth chucking that was beating me up. The nice thing about it is if you don't like it and it doesn't work they will refund the cost of the box.
