I, too, have a Progressive and an Autoformer, but I have the Progressive plugged between the post and the Autoformer. Is this wrong, and why?
|
If the voltage is low at the post the EMS will turn off the power before the autoformer could increase the voltage. If the autofromer is plugged in first it would increase the voltage to a safe level but if it can't the EMS would turn off the power to protect the RV. The autofromer will protect from low voltage but it will allow high voltage and the EMS will protect for high voltage as well as the low voltage. The autfromer also has spike and surge protection so it will help to protect the EMS. I hope I have explained my understanding of why I plug the autoformer in first.

Not exactly. Many of us think that Progressive makes a better unit and has much better customer service. Opinions, as always, probably vary.

Here is an opinion, they are not the same, we have used both Surge Guard and Progressive. As other will attest the main issue after quality of product is warranty and support/customer service. We now have Progressive hardwired and with remote readout. From my experience the quality of Progressive is much better, and based on others Progressive appears to provide better customer service.

I am thinking about purchasing a EMS but am unsure of what brand and model to Get. I want a portable so I don't have to start a wiring project. Any suggestions? I see quite a price range. I need a 50 amp unit.

I have the 50 amp hardwired in our new 3100RL but had a hardwired 30 amp in our last trailer. It saved us on low voltage several times and when I discovered the display was off by 2 volts one call and they sent me a new main board. This unit was 6 years old, no questions ask. That's good customer service. The hardwired unit is the way to go because once it's in you never have to think about it again. Plus you have the display with all your info right there and not outside in the weather.

Surge Guard has a 1 year warranty...Progressive has a Lifetime Warranty! That is the main reason I was sold on the progressive. You get what you pay for. Also, when I worked at Camping World we had a lot of the Surge Guards returned due to malfunctions or cheap workmanship.

We have the portable unit so we can check the power at the post prior to parking rig.
Nothing like getting rig set up only find power at the post is bad and moving to different site...
Portable
Shop around you can find it a lot cheaper..

We've used one of these for four years now: http://www.amazon.com/Progressive-In...gressive+50amp
As stated, shop around they are on sale different places at different times. If I remember right I caught a sale at Tweety's, but as you can see, Amazon sometimes has a good price also.
