Hole in Roof

Last night a tree branch speared our roof --- made hole about 1 1/2" in diameter - a clean hole - some water came through but we tarped up quickly. We have a 2004 - 3380RL -- branch came through just over kitchen counter. Still raining but tarps are keeping us dry. Any suggestions on repair kits? Les & Julie

Eternabond reportedly works very well. http://www.eternabond.com/detail.asp?id=ebrsb

Get white eternabond tape at an RV place, when you put it on it will not come off, works great I have used it and keep a roll in the RV.

Along the lines of Les and Julie's post, depending on the size of the hole would y'all recommend that the hole be filled in with something first to prevent creating a dip over time? If so, any ideas what to use for that?

Also Eternabond. You can find it at most roofing supply places if you are not near an RV supply store.

If you can wait for delivery time, here is probably the best place to buy it by the 4" roll, 50' long. I carry an extra roll with me all the time for just this type of emergency when I meet up with someone needing help. Unfortunately we're no where near you.

In making the repairs I would definitely make certain there isn’t a hole of any size left underneath where the patch is going. I would somehow fill it in with a solid piece. Even a small area left un-filled later on could become a problem area. Once it’s forgotten about it could cause a trip later on when working on the roof and that isn’t a place to have a fall.

Thanks everyone for all your help. Have actually found another hole -- this one through the slide topper awning and into the top of the actual slide --the big dining/living room slide. Hole is small -- we are now on our way out to pick up some Eternabond Tape. Have a repairman coming to check out the hole on the roof -- he has suggested putting in a roof vent over the hole and caulking that in - does this sound like a good idea???

I think the eternabond repair will be all that is required so long as it completely covers the damaged area. The stuff becomes more of a permanent fixture than super glue. Personally, I don't agree with the roof vent addition, but it is your choice. If there is internal damage as well which seems to be what you are also describing, the internal repairs may be a little more difficult from an asthetic viewpoint. If the limb pierced completely through the plywood roofing, then I would suggest a repair such as drilling a slightly larger round hole with a hole saw and plugging with wood and wood putty or similar. The internal area may require replacing the interior roof panel or at least some kind of patch. We could all benefit from pictures here, particularly when you decide on the repair mechanism. With regards to the hole in the slide topper awning, there is also repair tape available for awnings. Good luck with the repairs.

Got the Eternabond - repaired the small hole the top of the slide -- will take pictures of the hole in the roof when the rain stops - for now we have covered the roof with tarps to keep things dry. Unfortunately we are expecting rain for the next several days here in Ft. Langley, B.C.

If you have extended warranty insurance they will send an adjuster out to assess they damage. We have a policy from our home insurance company that is full replacement on damage or loss and it can be renewed for up to 10yrs.

Les,
It sure was windy wasn't it? We lost power in Murrayville about three times that night and once the night before.
Glad to hear you are dry for now.

Don,
That must have been some kiss! Hope you get it fixed soon. Isn't it raining up your direction?

How was the trip? Was there still any CGs open?

Dennis

The easiest way to fill the hole prior to applying Eterna Bond is to get a can of Spray Foam Insulation ,just shoot it in the hole, it will expand , once you have let it harden ,cut off the excess , then apply your Eterna Bond . Good Luck ...Scott

Les , just make sure that if the hole extends through to the inside of the coach , that you put a piece of tape or something like a paper plate , right up to the hole . If that Spray Foam gets on anything , you will have a heck of a time getting it off, this includes your hands .....lol trust me , you will want to where some disposable gloves , it is some kind of nasty stuff. Are you going to be singing the Beatles' song "Fixing a Hole (where the rain comes in and keeps my mind from wondering)"?

Sorry - I couldn't resist!
