Doesn't work too well when you pick 4.98394 though.

Not really Tom, but a nice try. The "number" you picked is known as a "Rational Number" (includes fractions) and what was asked for is a "number" (aka counting number or whole number which is implied). If the puzzle had asked for a Rational Number then your answer would qualify. If one wants to include many other types of numbers, then they are typically asked for that category, for example, Integer (positive and negative numbers), or Irrational numbers (includes even non numeric numbers - don't ask me to explain that). Unfortunately, the original puzzle asked for a "number between 1 and 9" and this implies a whole number.
Sorry to deflate your humor, because that was funny, but I learned this in 8th grade from an outstanding math teacher, Mr. Mitchell. I learned so much from that teacher, that I would race through my classwork, just so I could enjoy the tall cabinet of extracurrilar math and logic puzzles where I learned all kinds of other mathematic tricks including the one in the OP. I was fortunate to be able to select him for 9th grade mathematics, too. If it wasn't for him I would have had a terrible time with math and his tutelage enabled me to breeze through advanced mathematics throughout senior high school.
I'm pretty sure other forums will have a different list and make sure their SOB is at number 9!

My favorite is #9, MONTANA......... how do it know? I'll try what Art suggests, and use 1/2 a number and see what I like best.

Okay, you got me too, RJI47. 1/2 a number? Me no know what that be. LOL
btw - nice RV/TV setup next to what I'm guessing is your stickhouse. I especially like there's plenty of room around it. I park my rig at my stickhouse and it's a pretty tight fit and not straight back. At least it's mostly level.
