Diesel particulate filter(DPF)

Thought I would pass on my recent experience and knowledge gained on these new 07/08 Diesels (the ones that regenerate)

My shinny new 08 Ford 6.4L was a dog from day one...Poor MPG, Poor performance many of you may recall I said..not much better than my 05 V-10.I was not lying. Just had the DPF replaced yesterday at the local Ford Dealer here in Davenport Florida as it was diagnosed as" cracked.

My symptoms were..poor all over performance, poor MPG, frequent regenerations..black sooty tailpipe, smell of fuel when in regeneration.

I can not say this LOUD enough...If you have the new generation of Diesel and your tail pipe is black...You have serious trouble..your DPF is malfunctioning or cracked. There are NO black tail pipes in the new generation of diesels...that is what regeneration is all about... NO SOOT IN THE TAIL PIPE. Mine was defective from the factory and we drove 4800 miles like that. My fault..I knew that was not normal but we never had the time to have it looked at and I did not fully realize the negative effect a bad DPF would have on all over performance.

We just cleaned out our tail pipe. It is now bright and shinny. It took a half bottle of awesome and 1/2 roll of paper towels to clean the black soot build up out..

The folks in our row here at the camp ground wondered what I had done to the truck as it was quieter as we clattered by. We shall check performance over the next few days and report on the results.

Rich, We're glad you got your truck fixed and running right. I really believe you'll notice the difference in power and mileage. We're glad it was "just" the DPF and nothing internal or major.
Now you can enjoy the benefits of that new diesel!

Glad that they found something wrong and it was not the truck if you know what I mean. Did you get to see the bad part? That's what would be interesting. I have heard[rumor] that about 150k that the DPF will need to be replaced and it ain't cheap. Have you heard anything like that?

Mickey..The DPF and hardware cost 1037.00 and change. That does not include the labor cost to install. We ran over 50 miles today running to various stores about 60% between 50 and 60MPH and 40% 35 MPH and under We noted a significant increase in power. This thing now takes off like a rocket. The MPG sky rocketed. We logged 15.6 MPG under the above driving conditions..never came close to that before. Did not have a single regeneration..always had one or more . they did a complete diagnostic check, did a power balance adjustment..whatever that is and brought the software up to Ford Job 2 level. We did see the bad part..there was no visable sign of damage..they say it is internal. I think I now have a real diesel truck . Perhaps now I can join in with the rest of you and woof about how great the diesel motor is.

That is very good news Rich...I had a feeling something wasn't right.
Hopefully you will enjoy a much better experience now that it has been repaired. I know I love mine.

I agree with Rich that a black tailpipe with these engines means something is amiss. Here's what our truck's tailpipe looks like after more than 21,000 miles. And it's never been cleaned. Rich, I'm glad yours is fixed and hope now you'll understand all the hoopla.

Rich,
We're glad that you have your truck runnin' right. You were very fortunate to find a capable service dealer while "on the road". Good luck and we hope that you enjoy the "new" diesel.
