Here are some ideas; now what will work the best?????????

Ozz - That's a tough question without an exact answer. I think all of the options you presented will work in some fashion, but the key is the distance to the signal source and what objects lie in the signal path that might reduce the strength. Longer distance or more objects in the path require an antenna with higher gain like the parabolic antennas you found (including the homemade ones). The disadvantage of these is that they typically have a very narrow beam width and require you to point them carefully to pick up a signal. If you think you will generally be some distance away, I would suggest that you build your own (but don't use the plasma torch to assemble!) - it will probably work as well as the commercial ones and be a lot cheaper.

I couldn't find any pricing and haven't used this product, but it appears to be an all around solution that should be easy to use. The quality appears (?) to be good and it looks like they are using a commercial type, high gain vertical antenna that you don't have to worry about orienting.
Let us know how you make out!

It's a pretty straight forward tutorial of wi-fi and antennas.
