Why my grill does not get hot???

I know it is cold some places, but some of us are grilling.
Here is why your grill may not get hot after you change a tank.
Just FYI

Q. My LP gas grill won't get hotter than 250 to 300 F, even with all burners on high. Why?

Since 1995, all regulators (the part that attaches to the gas tank to regulate the flow of gas) have included a safety device that restricts the gas flow in the event of a gas leak. But, you can inadvertently activate the safety device without having a gas leak. This typically occurs if you open the LP tank valve rapidly, or if one or more of the burner control knobs is in an open position when opening the LP tank valve. If you do activate the gas regulator safety device, the grill will only reach temperatures between 250 and 300F even with all burners on the high setting. To reset the gas regulator safety device:

Close the LP tank valve.
Turn all burner control knobs to the OFF position.
Disconnect the regulator from the LP tank.
Open the lid of the grill.
Wait at least five minutes if the barbecue had been lit
Turn burner control knobs to HIGH.
Wait at least 1 minute.
Turn burner control knobs OFF.
Re-connect the regulator to the LP tank.
SLOWLY turn the LP tank valve all the way open.
With the lid open, turn the front burner control knob to the HIGH position.
Ignite the grill by pushing the crossover ignition button several times.
Close the barbecue lid.
The barbecue should reach 500 to 550 degrees in 10 - 15 minutes
.

To keep the regulator flow valve from tripping again, when you are done grilling always:
Turn all burner control knobs to the OFF position
Turn off the LP tank valve last

Good post E. Sven,

Same valves are on the Monty tanks which causes some folks fits when opening them too fast on empty lines. That is also the reason why Keystone puts the little red regulator opposite the main regulator on the newer models, to prevent a rapid flow through an empty line.

With some adaption, sounds like the process for resetting the safety valve is the same.

Brad,
How much newer than a 2005 for the little red regulator?
Our 2005 has a selector lever for the right or left tanks and a green/red indicator

E. Sven,

I know they put them in the 2006 Models, and I thought 2005 but maybe not. Whichever side your selector lever is located, the little red regulator is in the opposite propane cabinet. It's located in the LP line just downstream of the tank.

I believe your 3400 has the selector on the street side LP cabinet, so the red one should be on the curb side.

RVIA standards required them on all trailers with tanks on opposite sides starting in October, 2005. We don't have one, but following the slow opening procedure has kept us out of trouble so far.

Next time I see a new unit, I will have to take a look.
My regulator and selector valve are on the drivers side of the 3400.
Build date is 2/05.
To let you know, yesterday I cleaned the grill and had the problem with the Webber Q.
Couldn't get it to heat up so followed the instruction I posted.
Cooked last night 4 thick, juicy, marainated steaks, cooked perfectly.

Thanks for the tip and the directions.
One more little thing that won't irritate us.
