Front Lifting Jacks Keep Blowing Fuse

I have a new to me 2007 Montana 3000RK and everytime I lift the front I blow the fuse that is going to the relays that are attached to the batteries. Do I have bad relays or could there be another problem? I attached a picture of the 2 relays. The fuse is attached to one of the orange wires. Sorry the picture is upside down.

Those bimetallic self resetting breakers get pits burned in the contacts every time they open and reset. This means more resistance which means more current and heat in the circuit. Time to change the one for the front landing gear.

They are only 50amp should be replaced with 80 amp

This is probably a stupid question, but here goes. Should I replace both of them with 80 amp or just the one connected to the pump? I found two breakers on Amazon,. I'm not sure which one I should use.

Just the one connected to the pump. I used the manual reset but the automatic should be fine also but I am sure others will chime in as to preference.

Clarification needed. Are you blowing the in-line fuse in the orange wire? Or tripping the auto reset circuit breaker?

If it is the in-line fuse that is blowing, that has nothing to do with the auto reset circuit breakers.

Mine is also a 2007 model and has the in-line fuse in the orange wire to the jacks. The only time I have ever had it blow was when I forgot to loosen my JT Strongarm stabilizers before trying to raise my jacks. After blowing 3 fuses one after the other it finally dawned on me what my problem was.

A 2007 has the old style Ventura electric landing legs. The 50/80 amp breaker issue is not applicable here. The 30 amp fuse on the orange wire leading to the gear motor is adequate. If it is blowing it implies there is a problem with the leg(s), likely binding or bent.

I first blew the inline fuse when I initially lifted the legs. I replaced the fuse and then the breaker went. The legs seam to go up and down smoothly. I don’t see any binding.

Lifting the legs too far will cause the fuse to blow. I don't understand how the 50 amp re settable circuit breaker would trip running the legs. The 30 amp fuse should go first. I haven't seen a 2007 era wiring for a while. I am guessing the left CB is the one with the orange wire and fuse to the leg motor? Is there a picture from a little further out that show more of the wiring?



You say the legs work smoothly. Is that under load? If they are smooth running then I would look at the drive motor.

My orange wire with the in-line fuse is connected to the circuit breaker terminal that has the wire that goes direct to the battery. Meaning the jacks operate directly off the battery and independently of the circuit breakers and would not trip the breaker no matter how much current the jacks pulled. Can’t really tell from your picture but yours looks to be the same.

My rig is just a year older than yours so probably the same set up. Once a year I drop a little 90 weight rear end grease down the top of the legs to lubricate the screw shaft inside the leg assembly. Then I pack the bevel gears in the top of the leg assembly with grease. Learned this off this forum and have never had a problem.

Actually on a 2007 Montana the pump has nothing to do with the front landing legs as they are 12 volt motor driven not hydraulic.

I am very new to this 5th wheel. Do you have a link to this procedure? How do I access the top of the lift jacks and bevel gears.

Am I understanding you correctly, that I should not upgrade the breaker to the 80 amp size?

The breaker upgrade has to do with some of us having a problem with the OEM 50 amp breaker to the hydraulic pump tripping and resetting during slide operation. And we have upgraded to 80 amp to solve that problem. Some have upgraded it even though they have not had the problem simply as a preventive step. And some have never upgraded and never had the problem. It is not a problem that will leave you stranded. More an annoyance that the slides start and stop a few times during travel. But if it does start happening it will gradually get worse.

I will let jimcol address the lubing.

Back to the legs. Do they now work?

Sometimes over retracting them causes the jam nut inside to lock up.If really stuck you have to remove and disassemble the leg to free it up. You want to *NEVER* over extend or over retract those legs. Many of us marked the legs so we could see how far they were from their limits. I don't remember the exact measurements but I can find them if interested. I seem to recall 19" of travel but I am not positive.

You say the legs work smoothly. There are two parts to the leg system. The manual inside leg you adjust with the pin. The other is the driven part which is where the problem may lie. Which one works smoothly? Even under load?


The caps on the top of each leg pop off. Some pour some 90 weight oil (not a lot) in there hoping it will work its way down to the drive screw. Too much oil and you will have it leaking out the bottom of the legs. It is not a perfect system but is seems to help. Later models of the legs had a zerk fitting which could be used to lube the drive screw.

When I was raising the leg, it didn’t seam to bind. The part that slides up not the lower leg with the holes. I will look at it this weekend and see if it needs to be lubed.
