New truck one part at a time
Just got our truck out of the garage -- $3350! Had a complete do-over on the brake system after burning out the calipers three times in 3000 miles, front wheel bearings repacked, new tie-rod ends, one new inner tie rod end, complete repair of the differential, complete check of the charging system and glow plugs. Other incidentals were taken care of, making the truck almost like new (as far as the running gear is concerned). This job along with the previous work done on the brakes coming east across the U.S. amounted to right at $6,000. Even with that, our lifestyle is still the best! Would not change it for a stick house where we would be stuck (no pun intended) in one spot with higher living expenses.

Here here Orv. Couldn't agree more. Lets see, 6,000.00 bucks would barely cover the insurance, taxes, mowing, raking, shoveling &/or plowing, etc. on a stick house. At our ages we should be living a lifestyle of leisure and not slaving over a stickhouse.

I am blessed in that so far old age hasn't stopped me from doing this kind of work myself. Dealers / shops have to stay in business, but the prices they charge still makes me shake my head!

imho-periodic repairs are inevitable, even though you have had to redo some recent repairs- I intend to continue to repair my old 95 for the foreseeable future- much easier than a new truck which would require additional equipment to be equal to what we now own- I'm with you Ols on the great lifestyle we share- Don

I don't share a full timer lifestyle and still like Orv's mentality. When I retired we relegated to a stick house for reasons I won't detail, but have our TV and RV for the long run. I am mentally prepared to putting funds into what we have rather than rotating new. I think Orv's plan is less expensive in the very long run and that's why we'll probably do the same.
Other than maintenance and normal wear and tear, I hope Orv's brake issues are now behind him.
