Somethings broke

In my shinny new truck already... had to take a trip up the Ohio TPk today so took the new Ford to rack up some miles. Don't like to talk MPg because the truck only has a cpuple of hundred miles on it....but. Punched the MPG O meter at the toll gate 40 miles up 40 miles back on the tpk and it said 17.2mpg..well that can't be right. set it to 0 at the toll booth on the return trip and when we paid the toll in said 17.3mpg. Since all we hear is how crappy the mpg is on the 6.4l my trip computer is broke..will take it in in the AM for service...It also is saying in the 12's's around town..hummmm.....

Guess mine has been broken since May. That is in the area that mine gets when driving on the interstate without the Monty. I also get around 12 to 13 w/out the trailer when in city driving. On a recent trip to Estes Park I averaged 10.9 MPG pulling the Monty. Still has only 4k miles.

I don't know Rich, even though we have a 2002 Chevy (not a Ford) we get near 19 mpg when we're not towing.

Towing has been as little as 7 mpg (thank goodness that was only once) and 12 mpg, I think once we got 13 mpg but I can't swear to that. I have a log somewhere but Lord knows where it is. Oddly enough we have gotten some of our best towing mileage when in the mountains.

So, maybe it is not broken at all?

Rich,

My 05 f350 diesel tells me I am getting 16 mpg right now ( not towing)It
does drop off when I am towing though. Strange as it may seem this beast is getting better mpg than my expedition (according to those trip computers) I tend to believe the general accuracy of the unit as it does dip down to 11-12 if I do a week or so of round town driving. If it is wrong then hey I am happy with the illusion.

I've never had much faith in the on board computer mileage calculator. I always figure mine the old way before there was computers.....how many miles driven on a tank of fuel and divide by the gallons put back into the tank.

I think I would try a manual check before taking it it. A nice weekend project... Fill it up, take a nice 150-200 mile drive on the interstate and then return to the same station and top it off again. If the computer is way off from the calculator, then take it in...

The MPG O meter in my 05 V-10 was right on. The newer diesel's are known to get less MPG than the older ones. All I have been hearing is how crappy the MPG is on the new 6.4l and this one is at 17mpg+ with less than 200 miles on it. I was being a smart a** about the MPG O meter being bad.. The truth will come out as we get more miles in. We are thus far very impressed with the 08 6.4l,,it is a beasty..

Yeppers that new rig is a beasty alright. I was just over at the local dealership salivating over one.Wish I could find a valid reason to trade the 05 in.

Well I tried my best not to buy one..used every excuse I could think of. Absolutely no one on this forum was any help..at all. Even Helen did not help,When I would say..we don't really need a new truck...the response was..when did that ever stop you from buying something we did not need. Told the dealer ship we did not have time to order one. They said we will find you one..when they found one it had 3K more options on it than I wanted..I said..In order to sell me that truck you would have to make me a offer I can not refuse......they did...truck in driveway..some times you just can not win..

I would be willing to bet that if you took one for a ride you would come up with a reason pretty darn quick. As soon as ours comes in we are going up to the top of MT LeConte (6600 ft), reset the trip meter and drive down to Marryville, TN (elevation 740 ft) and see what our milage is.

Now that we have the 6.4 diesel and drove V-10 for nearly 3 years in nearly the identical truck and will be pulling the same camper all the myths concerning diesel/Gas will be tested and reported.. The crappy MPG on the 6.4l myth is already
unraveling. We are not doing anything different in how we drive or what we pull.

I think most who are complaining about poor mileage with the diesel are comparing what they got with a previous diesel, not a V10. You expect much better mileage with a diesel than a V10 and so far it's not there. Most seem to lay the blame on pollution gear.

Careful we don't do the apples and oranges thing. A 3/4-ton and a 1-ton are 2 different animals. Comparing MPG on them isn't a true comparison. My old F250 7.3L got 19 MPG without a load and 9-11 MPG when pulling. The new 1-ton gets 8.5 to 9.5 when pulling, and around 12 when not. It is a 1000 lbs. heavier and has the government mandated pollution controls on it (more restrictive than 2002), so what can I expect. Bottom line is that I will have to pay more to run a newer, more powerful truck. Like space in the RV - it is a trade-off.

But wait. What about that story that a 1 ton is just a 3/4 ton with 2 extra springs? Do those two springs made that much difference? g

Rich, We just returned from a trip of over 600 miles (one way) and the F350 made it on a tank of diesel. That's without the Montana, driving Hwy 97 to I-5 to Hwy 99. Until we got below Corning, we were on cruise control a lot; after that it depended on traffic whether we could use cruise or not. Towing we usually average over 10 mpg. And, the truck isn't even broke in yet, so we can't complain.

Rich,

We just drove to CA and consistently got 17.9 without towing.

Towing, our best is 11.9.
