Lube Plate

Today when I unhitched the Monty the lube plate fell off the hitch pin.

Why would that happen? How do I get it to stay on so that I can hitch-up for the next trip?

AS strange as it may sound, it may have been installed upside down. I noticed that mine had rotated on the kingpin, not the fifth wheel. I looked it said this side up.It could be the "cut on the teeth"on the disc.Bill

Lay the lube plate on a solid surface, take a hammer and hit every other tooth and mash it out a little. These plates are prone to slipping off after a while and when it does again, mash out the other teeth! I suggest if it keeps falling off, buy another. I bought the one on our tongue when we picked up the Montana in August of 03 and had to mash the plate once this last summer.

My plate finally would not stay on so bought a new one. I wish I'd had Steve's advise about hammering the little fingers. That might have made it work for a while longer. But I figured 3 years was pretty good. Sure beats the heck out of using grease!

Thanks for the hammering advise I hope I still remember it when the next one starts to fall off!

We bought a new one when we took delivery on this Montana last August. It fell off first time I unhitched. I took it back to the dealer and was told sometimes they get a defective one. They gave me a new one and it's had no problems. If yours is pretty new, maybe try taking it back and complain.

Thanks Steve,

Since I have only had the Monty 11 days it is a new plate but it is 150 miles back to the dealer and a new plate is less than $8. I am going to try hammering the the teeth but I am also going to get a spare lube plate just to have it on hand if needed.

Like Steve we had trouble with our new one when we got it along with the Monty. We tried the hammering and it helped some but then we did the grease thing (to make it stick) and it seems to work. We aren't having problems now and it may be they need to wear a little. This newer one seems thicker than the old one we had. Not sure we made a good decision is letting that go but when we got the new Monty we wanted everything new to go along with it!
Happy trails......................

Not sure of the name but they are at CW and other RV supply stores. We got ours from our dealer and then a replacement from CW.
