1000 Islands Area

We are considering a trip to the 1000 Islands area the first week of October. Anybody have any RV park recommendations?

We would also be interested in recommendations on other areas we should visit. We will be attending the race in Dover on Oct 1 then heading north. We have never been to the Northeast before.

Are RV park reservations required this time of year?

Thanks

We stayed at the Ivy Lea KOA. It's a well run campground, but it is definitely geared for families. There are several others in the area.

If you want to see Boldt Castle, there are two ways to get there. You can drive to the Boldt Castle Yacht House on Wellesley Island and take the free shuttle, or you can one of several boat tours in the area.

Thanks. Searching on-line I found "1000 Islands Campground" and "Swan Bay RV Resort". Anybody been to either of these?

If travelling to the northeast, especially NE, I suggest reservations be made ahead of time. After Labor Day, not so much, but I make them regardless.

Sorry, just re-read your post. If heading to NE after Oct.1, except for Columbus weekend, reservations are probably not necessary. Some of the best places shut it down for the season in early Oct. so call ahead.

Take the boat trip to the castle as it also does a trip through the 1,000 islands. Take a trip that gives you unlimited time at the castle where you can catch any boat back.

Hi Scott,

We stayed at 1000 island CG last year, its kind of old and well used, but it worked.

Swan Bay is beautiful, but you are going to pay top dollar for that beauty.

Where are you staying for the Dover race? We live in North East, MD

Hi Scott,

We live 20 minutes from Alexandria Bay and can give you some info on camping in the Thousand Islands.

The best location for your time frame (1st week of October) would be Wellesley Island State Park. We stay there often even though it is close to home. The park has full hookups, paved sites and is open until October 9th. You would need to make a reservation on Reserve America: https://newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/welcome.do Rate is approx. $36/night plus $5 for out of state residents.

There are other parks but Wellesley is the flagship park in the entire NYS Park System.

Thanks! I made a reservation at Wellesley Island; got in Mon-Thur, the last weekend was booked. We'll figure out something else for Friday; maybe head towards VA a day early.
