G614 tire wear improved.

Last year, I had unusual tire wear on our G614s both on the inside and outside edges. After talking to the Goodyear rep, I inflated the tires to 105psi and did not alter that psi, the edges are now smooth like they should be. Aparently, inflating to the chart of weight verses psi, the real answer was to inflate the tire to spec psi cold. I was running the tires at 95psi as per weight chart and had the unusual wear that now is normal wear.

That's good to hear Steve, nothing worse than having those expensive tires wearing out

On the advise of a couple of other MOC'ers we set our G614S at 105 psi cold and our tire wear looks good. In fact the Goodyear guy in Haines city said it would not hurt to run them at the max psi of 110

After hearing of the wear problems I moved mine up to 110 and haven't had any problems.

OK, just thinking out loud here: Do you suppose that running the lower pressure per the load charts is fine if driving in a straight line all the time, but with the side wall flex at the lower pressure causing enough flex to scrub the outside/inside edges of the tires?? I ran the 614s on our Monty at 105 psi and put 20K on them with no problems.

Actually, I think running the tires at a low psi caused them to wear in that fashion. The straight line or curves wasn't the factor.

Sometimes I wonder if in an effort to do everything right, we over-think things.

Michelle & Ann, this topic is describing that one should start at the maximum psi, then adjust downward if you start to notice the middle of a tire wearing out, implying there is too much air for the load the tire is carrying.

Others have used a weight chart and ended up with an underinflation problem that occurs even in straight driving. There have been topics posted here with many members reporting outer edge wear and this being on the highly lauded Goodyear G614 tires. What a disappointment to hear a viable tire solution was not working out. It sounds like it was because of underinflation from what is being called "over-think" things (great way to put it BethandKevin).

As an example, I have Marabombs and religiously keep them at 80 lbs (to support 3,400lbs) but my tires don't even weigh the 3,000 lb limit of the axle! On the books the tires should be overinflated, but they aren't wearing that way, so I keep them at the max. Now after 5 1/2 years, they are getting swapped out and I will start with the max inflation on the new tires. I am convinced that trailer tires are stressed the most on turns (even on slightly curved highways) so more psi is better.

Kevin ... I agree on the overthinking theory. I have RV friends in the mindset of "as long as it hitches to the truck" mash down on the little pedal. Amazingly, they have near zero issues with towing. That being said, I'll still carry tools and jacks.

Good to hear, Steve. I have run ours at 105 to 110 psi since they were installed three years ago and the wear is low for the miles we've put on them. I do have the little ribbon of wear on the outside edge, like Ozz and others reported awhile back, but it's minimal and is not something I'm worried about.

I did tear up one of the G614's when we had a bent spindle. That one is now the spare.

Hi

Goodyear apparently had some problems with certain production runs of the G-614.

Mine had that wear on the edges even at 110 Psi.

The Goodyear field rep offered me a new set of tires but wouldn’t put them on my wheels because of the markings showing them to be only 85 Psi. wheels.

I purchased 4 used 110 psi. wheels from one of the MOC members that had upgraded. He shipped them with G-614’s that had a newer date code on them than the ones the dealer had in stock.

I am running them at 110 psi. I now have 5,000 miles on them and including the mileage from the previous trailer they have about 10,000 miles on them and the wear is normal.

I am still running per the weight chart 90 PSI. I have the wear on both sides . However I have put an additional 8K on them and they have not shown the wear has gotten worse.

Running the G614's at max psi won't hurt the tire. Running at a lower psi might.

Hi

I ran the first set for over 20,000 miles at 110 PSI and they had the edge wear like we are talking about. So I tried the pressure from the weight chart. It didn’t seem to make any difference.

When you look at all of Goodyear’s tire maintenance documentation you see this wear pattern marked as “under inflation”. The field rep was to quick to offer me free tires for it not to have been a problem known to Goodyear.

The present G-614 tires are wearing normally. I have another 10,000 miles to travel in the next couple of months. We will see how they wear by the time I am finished with this consulting contract.

I have to learn not to get involved in consulting on fleets that are spread out all over the continent. I am wearing a grove in the road from Florida to Nebraska. LOL

This makes me wonder if they changed the rubber compound because of all the abnormal wear on the older tires.
Like any designer and manufacturer, if there is a problem with your product, you make changes in the design and components of your product. Look at NASCAR, they change the compound for different cars and different racetracks.
Jus sayin...

I do believe in good maintenance , but agree to not let it dominate my thinking. RVing is about pleasure and relaxation. I do run my Gs at 105 and they are doing well.
