Rich, It will regen more often in city driving since the EGT is not as hot as when towing. The crud builds up in the exhaust a lot faster in the city driving. I make sure I take my 2500 Chevy out at least once a week if not more and take it up to some highway speeds just to make sure the exhaust is cleaned out good. I make sure even if I'm not towing that I hit some long upgrades if I can and keep the rpm up to clean out the pipes!

Phil: With the new diesels you also get a 'Diesel Particulate Filter', basically a filter that captures all the black soot you are used to seeing from a diesel engine. Well, this soot plugs up the filter so the 'regeneration' cycle 'burns' it out, leaving just an ash that will eventually fill the filter and require a major service/replacement (estimated at over 100,000 miles minimum). If you are not driving 'hot enough' exhaust temperatures, each of the manufacturers cause a 'regen' cycle to take place that ups the exhaust temperture enough to cause the soot to burn away, opening up your exhaust flow again until the next time. The mpg issue is because they all increase the exhaust temperature by either adding fuel or increasing the amount of fuel in the engine operation -- more fuel to a diesel equates to either more power or higher exhaust temp (or both!).
Hope that made sense.

Phil, The regeneration as I understand it, only applies to the 2007.5 chevy, 2007 ford and dodge and newer.

As rouge says 2007 and up will regenerate..Since I am a simple person I look at it simply. It burns soot with diesel fuel that does not turn the wheels of the truck. The more it regenerates the more fuel it uses that does not turn the wheels of the truck. That is good for the enviroment, good for the oil companies but very bad for the person who buys the fuel that does not turn the wheels of the truck. My shinny new Ford has regenerated for over 5 mins while I watched the MPG plummet during that time..this is not a good thing. OOpps..yes it is the hole in the ozone is closing.. I am doing my part.

Thanks everyone for the explanation. I guess it's a good thing that I have an '05, I think, however, what symptoms occur while this is happening?? Just in case I upgrade.............
