Vietnam Vets!!!!!

Watching Miss Universe 2008. I just seen some amazing pictures of the County side, truly breath taking. Not what I remember when I was there in 1967. However I said many times this would be a Country that was and could be a wonderful vacation spot. GBY...

I missed the show, would have liked to see the countryside shots.
All I saw when I was there was the Jungle and river in the Delta, up close and muddy. I remember the constant rain and can still bring up the smell of Napalm in my mind.

Not to mention the fecal stink, bugs, heat, and leaches. In town, in the boonies, everywhere, and the stink of fear. LOL, that is the place I want to spend my vacation. Dave P.S. The nose never forgets.

I have friends that went back on vacation, I dont think I will. I hated every minute. Ken, If I remember right you may have been in the same area as I was, in Dong Ha 68-69 I think was III Corp ?

I have not the slightest interest in going back. I too hated every minute of it. Can still remember the smell. Not good. Too many other places to see.

I don't miss it at all. Any thing I might want to see may be on television. We have just as pretty a countryside in these United States as any other country has.

I spent my first 200 days, July 68-Aug 69, at C2, 1 mile below the DMZ between Dong Ha and Gio Linh, and the last 5 months were ops off of Hill 55, South of Da Nang.

No thanks!

12 months with Americal Division and the 196th LIB in I Corp and 11 months with the 11th Armored Calvary Regiment down South. I swear it took over a year for all the red clay and dust to to leech out of my skin after getting home. Although my body carries a constant reminder of my time in-country, I have a desire to go back for a visit...this time on my terms.

Nope, not for me, my tour was enough for me. I still can't bring myself to go into an oriental restaurant. I can still smell that country and see a lot more than that most nghts.

'65-'66...early vietvet!

I was primarily in III Corps in the early years. We actually could not leave the country as later many went to Hawaii and other Pacific locations for R&R. In Vung Tau they had a beach called Back Beach, (Bai Sau) and I actually enjoyed that area for only brief R&R --2 days!! It is a beautiful country with legimate views that many have here to never return. It seemed ironic to me that Miss USA tripped and fell during the show. Many US servicemen tripped and fell, some never rising again from that war. I am so fortunate and thankful.

The hardest time for me is early spring when all the winter road kill start to warm up and rot. Just driving down the road brings back things I had hoped would stay buried. Visual stuff doesn't bother me but odors will trigger memories in an instant... Dave

Mailtous;
Very nice post, very thoughtful. I have trouble thinking about Viet Nam, without tearing up. That time in history, like our present conflicts, is sad and sorrowful.

I spent 67 - 68 as an artilleryman in the 25th ID and 70 - 71 as a Chinook pilot in III Corps and I have no desire to go back. As others have noted...I'll never forget the smell.

I have no desire to return to southeast asia. Not even for an all expense paid vacation to the most beautiful place in the entire country. Lord bless you if you can do it. I know many who have not yet recovered emotionally.

I typed my post and deleted it but thanks to the others above I to have no desire to go back. I did not leave anything there. When I was in Australia that was considered an easy vacation trip. NOT FOR ME.
