Alex, I never got my $25 credit at Verizon for whoever it was told you I referred them. I think it was last April we bought ours and a couple of months or so later we referred someone.

What is wrong with NOT using a router, and using Internet connection sharing between computers to get on the internet?

actually I meant you would use a regular router, not one that you plug your card into. We have multiple routers and one that is assigned to the Montana, would prefer to use one we already have.

what you describe is possible and many people do it. but they aren't actually using the router properly, because the computer with the evdo device in it, is the first 'router' and its software is not designed to properly handle 'routing', like the admin capabilities of a true router provide.

can it be done? sure. by folks very familiar with networking.

and is that most people? nope. certainly not on the RV forums i participate on.

a true 3G/EVDO router simplifies the task for the majority.

your suggestion is better suited for the minority of folks on this forum who qualify as networking engineers.

think about it this way... which sounds easier:

providing tech support for people using evdo on a computer, then ics to a router, then networking other windows machines

OR

using a real evdo router that is supported by its manufacturer because it was designed to work the way they are trying to use it.

I think you may be discounting the number of "Network" people who are members of MOC. We have quite a few IT experts here. But I do agree, your method is best for those that may be novices.
