Does the remote control turn the power on and off for this unit? I have talked to two people at Montana and they yes, but the service manager where I bought the trailer says no. He claims you have to turn the power on and off at the unit, once it is manually turned on then you can use the remote to play DVD's etc. This to me is like going to your tv to turn power on and off then just being able to change channels with the remote. The trailer is a 2004 3255RL 5th wheel purchased in May this year.

Mine used to have a very short memory. I had to re-program all of the settings and radio stations every weekend. Solved that problem by trashing the Quest and installing a Sony system. Much better sound and no re-programming every weekend.

What model Sony did you buy? My friend just bought a 2005 3400RL and his is driving him nuts also. Can non techies install one on their own or is it best to have someone do.

Mr Zip,

The Sony model I replaced the Quest with is the DAVBC 150. It's a five disc changer and puts out 650 watts. The speakers are a little larger than the Quest but will fit in the cabinet with some trimming. I also had to make two L-brackets to attach the rear speakers to the existing mounts on the ceiling.

Some home theatre manufacturers have the speakers wired from the sub woofer instead of from the head unit. This Sony system has the speaker connections at the rear of the head unit which makes it very easy to use the existing speaker wires. The only snag is that I didn't connect the speakers in the bedroom, but I hardly used them anyway.

Took me about two hours to change everything over. If you can hook up a home system, you should'nt have any problems.

Any reason not to use the existing speakers? Just curious.

I followed a recent recommendation, and went with the Sony DAV-FR1. It is a 5 disk DVD player with progressive scan component video. The new Toshiba sets have component video inputs. The Sony can also handle SACD disks. The only downside I saw was that the Sony does not have a A/B speaker switch. I had to add one in order to properly manage the bedroom speakers. Other than that it works fine. It fits nicely in the existing opening on my 3255RL. I picked it up on Ebay brand new for $368.

Rames,

I suppose you could use the existing speakers if you wanted provided they are the same impedance and can handle the power output of the new unit. Considering the quality of the Quest system, I chose to use the speakers which came with the new system. Just make sure when connecting the speakers, positive to positive, negative to negative to ensure proper phasing. Unlike boosting a car battery, it won't hurt anything if they are backwards but there might be some loss of lower frequencies and sound quality.

It didn't take me long to figure out the Quest unit was not what I could live with. In checking prices on home theatre systems, I calculated that it would be a unit you would pay about $99 for(including speakers and subwoofer!!!). I replaced mine with a Koss model from sears. The new unit was about $200. It is a 650 watt unit vs the old 150 watt unit. I used the new subwoofer, and the existing speakers except for in the rear. The rear speakers I replaced with a pair of nice in-ceiling speakers. What a difference this made. The controls are easier, the sound is better (including setting up sound for the rear speakers). I would recommend upgrading the Quest system to anyone!

How big of a job was it to replace the rear speakers? I also have a 3255RL, and the rear speakers hang down via a pedestel!

If you start out with the right size hole-cutter it isn't bad at all. The first hole took me longer, as I used a jig saw to cut it (I don't recommend this). For the second speaker I used a hole saw that was big enough, and it was very easy. The in-ceiling speakers themselves were then easy to install. Inside the cabinets I put a small protective piece of plastic over the terminal. The speakers I got have moveable tweeters, so they can be adjusted to aim the sound down and forward somewhat. They look great, as they don't hang down as far as the old brackets did. If your brackets are the same as mine were, they won't last long - mine were cracked to where they wouldn't hold the speakers anyway.

If I get some time and can figure out how to do it, I could try posting a picture of the result.

My Quest actually works! Doesn't mean I like it. My volume is too low on the first setting and alittle loud on two and three is good when in the bedroom with the bedroom speakers turned off. Anybody want a free one?

Using the existing wiring, replaacing all the speakers should be a sap. I just priced out the Sony 5 disc system, 289 and Circuit City, looks great, and is a hell of a lot better than the quest. As far as an A/B switch, I know in my bedroom upstairs, there is a switch in the ceiling to turn the speakers on and off, so even if the unit I buy does not have one, there is one there, so those of you looking to change your system, check and see if you have a similar switch.
