Beware of Credit Card Fraud

Just wanted everyone to beware of credit card fraud. Check your statements closely. Yesterday I found a $1925 entry for Asiarooms Hotel in Singapore on my statement. Needless to say I called the credit card company and they immediately closed my account and is sending me a new card. They told me I wouldn't be responsible for this charge (isn't that nice of them) since I hadn't been to Singapore and had no plans on going there. They said there would be an investigation as to why the charge.

My thoughts? The only way someone could get my credit card number is through some employee using it because we shred every receipt, every statement at the end of the year, and then burn the shredding. It makes me wonder if all these "farmed out jobs" with foreign employees could possibly have access to credit card numbers. If I had lots of money it wouldn't hurt so much but when all you have is a couple small pensions, it makes things a little tight. I'm going to rely on the credit card company (btw it's CitiCard) to make good.

When we do on-line shopping we use one-time virtual credit card numbers so that can't be the place where the leak comes from.

Just wanted to give a heads up.

Why Orv...I wasn't aware you were fond of Singapore...

But...a worthy topic for sure - and really scary.
At one time I had a lower limit card I used for online purchases, and I really thought that was the way to go. Of course the credit card company kept raising my limit because I always paid it off each month.
They really hate it when they can't make money off you.

These days a person really needs to know their limits of liability - what with online purchases and banking. These 'puter hackers are way too smart these days.

Had the same situation a few times, one time to add insult to injury they charged rooms at a nice hotel in Oakland County Michigan while we were in Virginia burying my grandmother!

Credit card companies have been fabulous the couple of times this has happened, even sent us new cards overnight to a small campground right near the Little Brown Church in Chickasaw County Iowa a few years ago.

It is frustrating, but so far, knock on wood, we have had very cooperative people at the credit card companies. The hotel did try to come back on us, till I wrote them a very long strongly worded letter with proof that they also had been had. I hope whoever used those rooms enjoyed the porn movies they charged to my account.

Glad it worked out well for you. Can you elaborate more about the one time virtual credit card, how are they obtained? Thanks , Bill

Citicard and Discover Card both have the ability to provide virtual numbers. They are one-time numbers and so far they've worked very well. If you have either of these credit cards you can get virtual numbers when you need them. It prevents you from having to post your real card number.

You need to go to the website for the credit card company to get the numbers. Very simple.

I had the same question and did a search on "one time virtual credit card" and looked at this link. I noticed my credit card company has the option, NO I NEVER KNEW IT!

Orv, that happen to me in the amount of 15K. They took care of it. They told me someone had hacked into their system and got a lot of numbers. All of the purchases happen before I received a statement. It was the card company that caught it.

I just talked to Citicard today and they removed the bogus charge so that when I get my statement it won't show. However, they have mailed me something that I have to sign and have notarized. I won't have to pay the charge. It just bothers me that this kind of thing can happen when we are so careful with our credit cards.

We use our card to charge everything. It makes it easy to see how and where we are spending money and to adjust bad spending habits. DW is an accountant and keeps receipts for everything. She checks our credit card activity daily on-line and several times has picked-up unauthorized charges. Only one (long distant telephone calls in Rome) was an outright fraud. Each time we have disputed a charge, the CC company has honored our dispute.
