FL 301 Jacksonville to Ocala
Heading out for Fort Myers, FL from VA in a few weeks. Google Map takes us down 95 to Jacksonville and then 295 to 10 and then down 301 to eventually connect to I-75. Is 301 a good route to travel or is it full of traffic lights? Thanks........

Nice road break from interstate can not think of the name of the town with speed trap. We stay at the KOA in Stark. This is our route From pittsburgh to Venice. I would recommend.

Prior years traveling to sub base in St. Mary's Ga, we would take 301 to I295/95 from I75.
Towns that were speed traps: Lawtey north of Starke and Waldo, South of Starke on 301. Not sure about today though. As a consideration other than I-10 you can stay on I295 past I-10 South to Exit 19 (Normandy Blvd or rt 228) Go west on rt 228 directly to 301. It cuts a little and a good road towing. Look at an Atlas or mapquest to see the cut.
You can take 301/441 South and cut at Rt 326 just North of Ocala and it's only about 6-8 miles to I75 from that right turn. Be safe. Dennis

301 is a good route to take. dennis hit it right on the nail. Get off north of Ocala onto I-75. Don't go into ocala. There are stoplights and ancious local cops along 301 looking for speeders going thru their towns so be careful. We use it everyear coming to Florida.

295 to I-10 to I-75 for me.
Longer route than 301 but better time. What with the traffic, traffic lights and radar on 301 I make much better time running 10 to 75.

I 95 to exit 373 then take state route 200 west to connect with 301. It may be slower than the interstates and there are traffic lights but it is a pleasant drive. It avoids Jacksonville completely and believe me, that is a good thing. Drive the speed limit and you won't have any problems. I have used it exclusively for six years now. the only real problem I have had is there is a railroad crossing in Baldwin and the train was stuck on the track once for half an hour. I still use that route.

When we went to Bushnell Florida last year - being newbies and nervous about "local" traffic - we followed Glenn's Route I-95S to I-295S to I-10W to I-75S.
Leaving we took I-75N to Route 326 to US 301 to I-10 -
It was a pleasant drive and shaved several miles from our trip -
We will follow that route when we had down
The push is on (leaving in 3 weeks - weather pending) !

I drive 301 several time a year and you have to be VERY attentive to speed limits as well as Univerisity of Florida games. I prefer to take 301 instead of I-75, I like the slower pace and the improved mileage.

Forgot and David beat me to it. When aproaching jacksonville on I-95, take rt 200/(A1A on the map) west at exit 373 in Florida. That takes you directly to rt 301 when you cross I-10. that eleminates all of the traffic in Jacksonville.

I take exit 373 which is the 2nd exit in fl from I 95 then follow aia to 301 to baldwin and down to almost Ocala where you see all the trucks head for I 75 ,There is a sweet bay or a Kash and Kary super market on the left , turn rt ... its just past all the horse farms on both sides of the rd , just follow the speed limit and watch for school zones in Stark and Waldo and Lawtey as they flash 24 hrs a day so follow the limit but its a great drive as wse drive it 6 to 8 times a year and love it as i get off I 295 and I 95 and I 75 for a long time ,, have fun sailer

Never having been to Fort Myers (other than to see the Red Sox play an exhibition game) we picked the Fort Myers Beach RV Resort. My niece lives in Fort Myers not too far from there. My brother and family will be joining us as from Albany, NY as well.
Thanks to all about the 301 excursion. We'll try in going down and see how it goes.....

Even in just a car I HATE I-75! I prefer 301 and it is a much easier (stress-wise) to drive. (By the way I have driven extensively overseas where the rules of the road are actually "suggestions" and both I75 and I95 in Florida are in my top ten list of roads to hate and they are in the top two of THAT list!) Just my opinion/experience. Ocala is notorious for speed traps especially on 75 as well as Gainesville (due to the college kids).
Have a safe trip!
