Landing gear question

My 5th wheel is in my signature. I've read before about people putting oil or grease "INSIDE" the front legs. I can't see anyway to do this on mine. Is it not possible on one as old as mine. Also if the motor broke with the legs done. How can I get them back up? My last SOB had a hole that you could slip a tool in and hand crank them up.

Mel, My 2955 is a few years newer than yours so I don't know if my information works for you. I have Zerk fittings on my landing gear about four inches from the top facing forward on each leg. Look inside the propane compartments for the top of the legs and see it you can see Zerk's on. yours.
You should have a wrench (looks like a brace) in the garage that will fit the landing gear on the drivers side. It is a shaft with a pin in it in the gas compartment.

yeah no grease fitting. I've had that tool but never found a place to use it. But I found it now, thanks to you.
Maybe I'll drill a small hole in the top of each leg and squirt some gear oil in there?

Thank you

Mine is only 2 years newer than yours. On mine the top on the legs, inside the propane bottle compartment, pry off. Might have to place a small screw driver between the leg and the cap but it will come off. It's just a friction fit.

I had a 2006 2980 previously. Agree with jimcol above. And somewhere I read you can just pour some gear oil or something like that down the top. The internal is a 20-25 inch screw drive shaft. By using oil, it runs own the shaft and lubes it all.

About 4 weeks ago, I contacted Lippert about maintenance on mechanical landing legs. They said to use bearing grease on the gears at the top of the legs and to pour motor oil down the center so it will coat the screw mechanism and the nut. I had followed that and will continue with an annual application of grease and oil.

I can get grease on the top gear, I'll pour gear oil down for the rest.

Thanks

I'm wondering what kind of mess there will be if you pour oil down the leg. What is to stop it from running all the way down to the foot pad and then collecting dust? Let us know Mel how it goes.

I have done this and don't remember any mess at the bottom. I think maybe I only poured about a couple of tablespoons when I did it tho.

So I put a little grease on the top gear. I had some SAE 140 gear oil so I poured some down the top of each leg. I ran them up and down twice and I had a little oil coming out of the right side leg but not the other side. I wiped it off and went in the house for about 30 minutes, I went back out and the oil is all over both legs and on the pads and ground. so it doesn't hold the oil in, but at least everything must be coated with the oil???

Some people have Venture landing gears. My 2008 Montana 3485 had them with a Chinese made motor driving both landing gears. They failed several times and I ended up cranking them manually to attach to the truck. We called Venture and they said the landing gear required dual motors, as the rig was too big for a single motor. Long story short we bought new landing gears, motors, and wiring harness and three days of grinding, cutting, and drilling we had a bullet-proof landing gear. Don't buy the rewbuild kit as it does not have the ball nut. It usually fails and the don't sell it.

I had a 2006 Montana with lippert front landing gears. Had to replace both as they were dry of grease. I have a NEW left side driven leg (no motor attached, just the whole leg assembly. I am in Southern Arisona. Interested in it, let me know. -John

Wipe up the excess. Clean off with Dawn Detergent. They run much better lubricated.

I apologize Mel. Should have told you in advance. First time I did it had oil all over the foot and the block under it. Now I only use two capfuls, probably two teaspoons in each leg. As soon as I pour it in the top I start exercising the legs in hope the lubricant is dripping down the screw. Still always have a slight bit of discharge on the foot of the leg.

There is a lot of videos on u-tube showing this method, but I'll give you the gist of it. While hooked up, raise the legs all the way up. Then you should be able to release the stanctions and remove them. Then take a small section of hot water heater insulator (like a pool noodle, but smaller around. ) cut a slit in it lengthwise and use your grease gun to fill the insulator. Slowly run that tube up and down the shaft making sure there is extra grease on the top to get some on the top knuckle. Then remove the cap with a screw driver and pack that area full of grease. Reinstall the feet and run them up and down a few times and your good to go. I found this method on utube and do it once a season.

Don't be sorry, I poured too much in. But I wanted everything to at least get a good coat of oil. Yeah most leaked out but I'm sure it's coated now. Not a big problem to clean up. In this case I think having to much oil and a little mess is better than the gears being dry.

Winter Strorage

When storing for the winter, I was thinking it may be a good idea to build some platforms to put under my levelers so that the shaft is not exsposed the weather. Any thoughts?
