Closet Doors

While bringing our Montana back from service, the plastic latch broke and one of the mirrored doors cracked the entire length. Has anyone repaired or replaced the doors before? Looks like you could just go to a glass repair shop and get a new piece of mirrored glass. Also, has anyone come up with a better latch for the closet doors? That is the root cause of the problem.

I have seen a hole drilled in the bottom track at the edge of each door with it closed and a peg or nail wedged in it, the doors will not move.

Your best bet would be a local glass shop. They can easily do the job. Ordering from Montana would be quite costly. We had to replace one whole door and the crating($75) and shipping to AZ cost us $150.

Tough luck about the closet door! Our plastic latch broke on our door also. Luckily we found it broken before we went on the road. At Camping World they sell the replacement latches. We bought several packs. However they do not quite fit, so Rich had to trim them to make them work. We are not very confident they will hold. So if anyone knows of a better latching system please share it!

What about a wooden bar in the tracks of the doors? Like you use in the sliding glass doors at home? I am not at the coach right now, so I cannot tell if the track is wide enough to get a wooden bar into them or not. Just an idea....

I cut two wooen rails, out of 1X2 the length of each mirror track. When we travel, Phyllis wedges them in and we don't worry about the doors moving. The plastic latches don't hold for beans!
Keystone should have installed a positive latch system in the door frames, so that you could latch the two mirror doors together. I'm working on something for this and will post it when I am done. Should be fairly simple.

We are out of warranty, but I have the extended warranty that we bought. Maybe that will cover it. But if a glass shop will be able to do the job, that is probably the quickest and cheapest. I like the pin idea and may use that idea. My wife said the latches catch her arm when she goes around the bed.

my last 5th wheel had pins in the track and it worked great. I am going to do the same with this one.

Reference the doors and the plastic latch that broke..Went out and looked at the latch on our new 3400( built April 25)Wonder if they have started to put in better latches as ours looks to be of sturdy construction?????

You can use Velcro on the edge of the closet door and the matching edge of the closet. Guaranteed they won't open during travel. Once you set up, reverse how the doors close and the Velcro is not engaged.

Just be aware that there are two types of plastic latches that are available at Camping World. They are very similar but one does not work well or fit. Guess how we found out!

Our latches broke several times and were always scratching my arms, so we took them out and use tension rods when traveling. Works great.

Steve and Betty,
Your suggestion of using velcro on the closet doors is a great idea! Gee, I wonder if Betty might be the one who came up with that one! I guess Velcro is not just for decorating anymore. Anyone who was at the Northeast Rally last June knows that Betty is an expert on using velcro in her decorating scheme. We were all so impressed at how beautiful and homey your Monty looked! See you at the upcoming rally.

Judy,

Do you know what the "correct" part number is at CW? I might want to order a couple to keep in my "parts drawer".

We bought a spare set from Beaudry RV in San Marcos, CA, about three years ago but have never needed them. We are still using the original, nearly four years old, latches. I have to think the majority of the problems with the latches breaking are because they are misaligned, putting undue pressure on them when opening and closing. Ours close smoothly and quietly. They are a bit of a pain to open but not difficult.

Also, ours are latched only when on the road. When we set up, the doors get moved to the opposite ends so they are closed but not in alignment with the latches. Thus the latches don't really get much use.

I still suspect misalignment to be the most likely cause of the breakage problem, though.

I riveted a small piece of metal [shim stock] across the back of ours then cut a slot, separating the hook part from the base, We've used them for 3-4 years now, no breakage and they are much easier to open.

I dont think Keystone is making better latches. We recently broke one and the dealer gave us another one, same quality as the last one. The dealer had some in his store and I wonder if they are better quality.
Keystone needs something better for these doors.
