Flooring

Feeling the "pressure" from my better half,Trish, I pulled up the carpeting in the Tana and replaced it with some oak plank flooring. Lowes had some 5/16 inch thick pre finished , tongue and groove flooring. It required using some adhesive, which made it a bit messy, but fortunately it easy clean up with soapy water. The floor is done, but so are my knees and back. Ahhh, the Golden Years.

Before actually installing the floor, I laid out one box of planks in front of each slide and opened and closed them to check for clearance. In the first picture my black faced Uline ice maker is visible.

That looks fantastic. It is good and bad however. The good is how great it looks, you did a super job. The bad is that there is no way I can show this to DW. Sorry!!

Thats looks great... What was under carpet when you lifted it up?? Did you use carpet savers before ?? Do you think the slides will rub the floor and mark it I WOULD LOVE TO DO THAT TO MINE but im afraid that the slides will make the floor up

Send a message via AIM to noneck
Agree with harleyf250, worry about the underside material of slides wearing down faster and then scratching that sweet looking floor.

I wonder if slide glides would help keep from marking up the floor?

Thanks for all the kind words on my floor job. I had bought the Uline icemaker back in 2002 from an RV store in Alabama called Campers Choice. I understand they were bought out by Camping World. I got it online and I recall it was shipped free. It is a 120v unit that makes 20 lbs of ice a day and the bucket holds 12lbs. I have also used it as a freezer in a couple of emergencies. I keep it on when traveling by using my inverter and keeping the water pump on. At the end of a long day the tray is full and the ice is not wet. I have moved it each time I got a different 5er, which has been three times. We love the convenience of always having ice.

We will be in the Middle Keys from Oct. until Feb, notify me if you are near.

Dee

Harleyf250 and Noneck,
There was only the bare flakeboard flooring under the carpeting and the same under the vinyl in the kitchen area. I pulled up the vinyl so there would not be any difference the the floor level.

The planks are only 5/16 inch thick and I used the recommended adhesive.

I just opened one box of the flooring and set it up in front of one slide and then brought it in. On the front edge of the floor where the slide begins there is a nylon rounded rub molding that the slide rides up on when closing. Using a flashlight I could see between the flooring and the underside of the slide. I then did the same test to the other slide. I thought about using the laminate flooring but it runs from 5/8 to 3/4 in thich and is weight a bit more. I'm sure if a pebble or something hard got under the slide it would scratch the floor. My soulmate says she can handle a scratch on the floor easier than nasty carpeting.
Hope this helped....Dee

Your floor is really beautiful!!! You did a great job! We put laminate throughout ours, and are very happy with it. We solved the problems with the slides, by putting carpet pieces between the floor and the slide when in transit. We have a couple of long narrow pieces. As the slide is coming in, Al puts them in place. It only takes a few seconds, and when we arrive at our destination, we store the pieces under the sofa. You may not need to do this, but if you do, you will find this works great.

Couchpotatoes,

The carpet strips under the slides sounds like a good idea, which I will use. No sense taking any chances. An ounce of prevention.

Thank you for the tip.

Redrover98, Nice job on the floor! I also have a Uline ice maker. I've had one in my campers since the mid 80's. I built-one-in in a Sprinter 5W I had but left it in when I sold it because I modified the cabinet door opening. Since then, I bought another one and built a cabinet around it out of thin mason board and covered it with oak colored stick on vinyl paper. Looks good and I have used it in several campers since. Right now I've got it in the W/D closet; close water and electric. I am however considering a W/D, and will have to move it. Did you run into any problems putting it where you did. Sure wouldn't do without it, plenty of ice at the beach for margaritas Kerry (FYI, the Uline is still available in two models - one like yours, and a lower profile style)

Very Nice looking floor and installation. Did you use shoe molding that came with the flooring or finish some standard oak to match the fooring. Also DW wants to know where you got the reclined with foot stool. Who makes it and model numbr please..
