Is that really the plastic bag stuffed in the hole , or is this just the way it’s laying on the floor ? Also is the spring broken ?

The plastic bag you see in new brake assembly is just a little bag with parts inside.
Yes spring is broken.
Did you track your problem down?

rerouted the brake wires to the outside of the axle and that solved my problem.

Montana Trailer brake issue.

Ok.. I found my issue with the 'Check trailer connection' message. I jacked up the trailer, and rotated the tires just like Smokey946 suggested. All rotated without any faults. I then had my son hold the trailer brake on low ,while I wiggled things around. The right rear tire had very little breaking on it. So I pulled the hub off and found 2 bare wires, and a broken adjuster at the bottom, along with a broken spring. I attached a photo of the wire. I just don't see what it was rubbing on. Maybe the backside of the drum.

Anyway. Thank you all for the help. Next call----Dexter.

Montana trailer connection.

Ok.
After all the help from many of you, I got the help I needed. I found the bare wire inside the brake drum. I sent pictures of it, along with pictures of the vin number and axle serial number , all to the warranty Dept at Dexter axle yesterday. Today a very nice man called me and asked me if I had checked all 4 brake assemblies out for damage. I told him that I only had pulled 1 off, but was concerned the other 3 might have the same issue. He said let’s make this easy. We will send you 4 new brake assemblies and 4 new axle seals just Incase you need them. After inspection if you have any new parts left over, he said I can ship them back. All at no charge.

Great customer service from Dexter !!!!

Also I ordered all new Timken wheel bearings that are USA made. 8 New roller bearings and 8 new cups. There is no way I’m putting that factory installed Chinese crap back on my axles. I’ve been around machinery my whole life and fully know what can happen with junk parts. Bearings are too cheap not to install the best ones.
Thank you to all fir the great information.

Randy.
